Where were you when your water broke?

I'm 30 weeks along, and I'm worried that I'll ruin my mattress, or carpet, or couch, etc...

Where were you when your water broke, and did you do anything to prep your house before your water broke? If not, did your water breaking ruin anything?

Re: Where were you when your water broke?

I was in labor in the hospital bed.

During my last 2 weeks or so of PG, I bought a cheapie shower curtain at the dollar store and put it on our mattress under the sheets, just in case. Yeah, it was July and it s ucked, but better than ruining our expensive mattress.

Re: Where were you when your water broke?

My started to break while I was in bed at 3:00 in the morning. I felt it so I got up as quick as I can to get to the bathroom.

I had put pads underneath the sheets ( like wee wee pads for dogs) just in case once I was 37 weeks... That helped out alot..

That's true.

Is it more common for the ROM to be done by the doctor, or while in the hospital?

You mean breaking the water? I'm sorry, I'm not getting the ROM acronym! Chat Icon

Um, well for me, my water broke on it's own. Actually, I think I popped it myself. Chat Icon I woke up from a "nap" and I stretched my legs and literally heard a little "pop" and then it was niagra falls all over the place.

The Dr was going to break it in a few hours if it hadn't broken on it's own. It all depends on how your labor is progressing whether or not they have to break it. I think that it's more common for you to be already in the hospital when your water breaks because early labor often begins before the water breaks.

I was at home, asleep on the couch in the living room because I had woken up at 4 a.m. and couldn't get back to sleep. It gushed all over, he was breech and his head wasn't down to plug the flow!

The funny thing about it all was that the night before, when I put clean sheet on my bed, I put the garbage bags under the sheets in case my water were to break while in bed. So much for preparing!!

Mine was broken at the hospital.

First pregnancy: I had just gone to the bathroom for my nightly 3am wakeup, got back in to bed. It wasn't a huge gush, just a little bit.

Second pregnancy: Maddie was born with the bag of waters in tact just like a little astronaut (called being born in the caul).

Re: Where were you when your water broke?

My Dh bought a mattress cover to shield the mattress from my possible leakage.Chat Icon

However, that never happened. I must have had some strong Kegels because I walked all the way from my bed to the toilet that morning and it gushed out of me there.Chat Icon

Oops... ROM is the medical term for water breaking... aka Rupture of Membranes.

Re: Where were you when your water broke?

I just finished dinner and was in my living room on the couch wacthing tv while Dh was washing the dinner dishes. I was 3 weeks early and not expecting it at all. I coughed and next thing I knew - I starting dripping.....Luckily I was home for about an hour (I had left work a little earlier than I would have normally) and not on the LIRR - my biggest fear....

Re: Where were you when your water broke?

I was having contractions all evening and in and out of bed,
BUT it broke about 4 am while I was in bed, I jumped up and rushed to the bathroom, surprisingly nothing was on my bed!!
brought a towel in the car for leakage on the way to the hospital

I slept with a waterproof mattress pad on my bed for the last month. Didn't need it though -- the doctor broke my water at the hospital after I was already in labor for a loooong time.

Re: Where were you when your water broke?

My water broke out of nowhere at home & in bed - 2 weeks early. Thankfully, I started my maternity leave that day otherwise I would have been on the LIRR. Chat Icon Chat Icon

ETA: Other than having to wash the sheets and mattress pad - nothing got ruined.
