any teachers starting an administrative program this fall?
Just wondering, as I may be looking to enter one.
Is anyone taking an admin. master's via stonybrook?

I have been looking into this. I want to go to a suny school because I just can't afford another masters from a private college...im going to be paying back my loans from adelphi for ever. I read up on stony brook.....its just really far from me. I wish suny westbury had a program.

and honestly if you are doing it to raise your pay scale, you're better off just taking inservice classes or other classes over the summer. It's ALOT of money for a minimal pay increase if you don't plan to do anything w/ the degree. Just my 2 cents d= )

My friend is currently working on hers... i think she is doing it with a cohort through MESTRACT... just so you know they are changing the certification regulations for the admin degree soon... so if it is something you are seriously considering you might want to see if you can get in under the current rules instead of the new ones...

I did it through Touro - they have an accelerated program and offer discounts to DOE members. The courses were EASY as well.

I just finished one through st johns, uit a couple of teachers at my job are doing it through college of st rose----its housed in other colleges

Thanks ladies for all of your help! At least now I know where to start looking.
I know about the inservice classes and have taken some of them, but I figure if I am going to collect all of these credits I want a piece of paper at the end of it. That way, if some day, way down the road I decide to change my career path, I have options.

I already have 2 Master's degree (one is an MBA from a previous career) so I am seriously thinking of skipping the Administrative degree all together and going right for my EdD. It's an idea I have been tossing around a lot, but the $42k price tag from Dowling is the biggest factor holding me back.

funny thing - I never got my diploma from them!!! I didn't go to graduation, and then kinda forget about it - now almost 2 years later and no diploma  .

Stony Brook doesn't have an admin master's, it's a post-master's advanced graduate certificate. If it matters...It is a joint program with Hofstra or St. John's EdD programs so the credits can be transferred.

St johns program carries over in to the doctorate program....that is what I am starting in January.....The only thing I am not sure of is the new regs, they changed as I left, I was grandfathered in because It was not my masters degree (I already have that from another school) it was called a professional diploma------

$42k is the cost of the EdD at Dowling, and I don't think St. Rose has that.
For what it's worth, if anyone is considering an administrative position I would do the doctorate as soon as possible. Yes, it is costly, but it is really necessary for high-level administration and doing it early gives it more time to pay off. Everyone I've known who has completed it has gone on to become principals or superintendants...If that's what you want to do, I would do the loans and get started.

For the Ed.D. in Instructional Leadership (not sure of Educational Administration) at St. John's I know they have gotten very strict about not letting anyone take courses beyond the PD without having the scores on the GRE that they are looking for and doing the interview. But I think there are a lot of changes on the horizon in SJU's program.

I just called them for info. and they said they aren't accreditted to do doctoral programs, only Master's.  $16,000 really is cheap though.

My AP did her coursework through Touro and had nothing but recommendatsions for them.

I am doing one through Stonybrook..it is 735 for 3 credits. I am in a cohort, meaning Stonybrook comes to a school (the cohort is in my school) once a week. Each class meets 10x and there are 4 classes a year. It was a no brainer to do this since I didn't have to travel on the weekends and I didn't have to travel anywhere else. You should let your assistant superintendent know you are interested in starting one and if you can get at least 15 people in your district to join you contact Stonybrook and they contact your local TRACT center. The TRACT center will post that a cohort is being formed and other people from other districts can be apart of yours. If you can't get one started you should contact your local TRACT center and see if there are any local cohorts forming for the Fall. I definitely recommend going through Stonybrook. At the completion of the program, 36 credits, I will have my School Building Leader (SBL) and School District Leader (SDL). I will always have the opportunity to use the certificate and if not I will always have the ability to change districts while keeping my credits. If they were inservice credits there would be no guarantee to keeping them.
