I agree with this, but a child that has stellar grades, National honor society, valedictorian & so on from ANY district on LI will have Ivy opportunities if their parents have planned it that way & the child was guided to acheive it.
I mean no disrespect to all the teachers(very skilled I'm sure) on LIF, but as a parent of a college kid I believe its the parents that ensure an excellent education. 99% of the districts on LI blow away the districts in most of U.S.
Our kids have a tremendous advatage already.
In my son's senior year of high school, his car slid on the ice in the student parking lot & he hit two cars belonging to other kids. They were BOTH brand new ESCALADES
This was in a MIDDLE CLASS town.
The pressure is so great here already, I'd hate to set the bar even higher.
I know its our job to teach our kids material things aren't most important, but I think it is a distraction for them.
I of course agree that it's a parent's job to make sure that their child succeed to the best of their ability in school, but I also think that the school district has a lot to do with the opportunities available to the student. When talking to the college guidance office (you can just call them) to discuss what type of support they offer, I was truly blown away by what I heard at Wheatley and Manhasset. They seem to go out of their way to offer tremendous support and resources. Syosset guidance seemed helpful, but not as...structured? I don't know; it could have easily been the person with whom I spoke.
I don't assume that my child(ren) will go to one of the Ivies, but rather I want them to find a place that will help them flourish in life. I've been thinking a lot about my high school experience where I got lost in a crowd of many and want more for my kids.
I guess I'm just thinking out loud now...thanks for everyone's responses!

I happen to work in one of the "better" districts on Long Island. And a lot of the reputation of the school has to do with past years....not so much the present time. It's a great school, and provides a fabulous education....but I doubt it's a better education than a student could get elsewhere....
Just keep in mind that you choose a house to live in...not just for the school district you're going to be in. I'd hate for you to buy a house based on the school only and then be disappointed with both the school and the house.

I wouldnt be concerned with how your child will feel because of what their friends have. It comes down to the values you teach them and for them to learn to accept what ever they have.

I grew up in a piece of crap house in a great school district- so that's probably the way I would go too...

I'd go for the better school district because you can always change your house. I live one block outside of the Syosset SD and wish we could move 1 block south  Its a great SD.
