Grew up in a Levitt cape. Now we have a weird split level that's not a ranch- it looks like a colonial from the front I guess.

colonial...
my understanding:
ranch - one floor
high ranch - all main rooms (kitchn, LR, DR and BRs) are on the top floor and a den and extra space are on the bottom floor
split level - you walk into a middle level where the LR, DR and kitchen is...then you have the option to go 1/2 flight up to BR or 1/2 flight down for den and extra living space

Bi-level...or hi ranch...people call the house all different things. When we bought this house it was listed as a bi-level.
