I have MANY friends who worked in the business world , then went back to school for teaching. According to them, Teaching is NOTHING compared to the business world (working in NYC) . Sure it has its tough points, but I highly doubt from their opinions it is more stressful then being in business. Just what I've heard......... Teachers have so much time off, it's not even funny, Per hour, teachers probably make more then someone like me who works 50 hours a week 49 weeks out of the year!!

But I'm actually looking forward to that -- since the master's work has been exciting and I'll love testing it out. I had an ESL kid last year and she was wonderful.

I would like to put my two sense in here, since I am a teacher also. I TOTALLY agree with the above poster and while I respect your opinion, I do ahve to agree that you don't understand the profession until you're in it YOURSELF. I agree that everyone chooses their profession, and honestly I have to say people who say "it must be nice" really dont' have a clue. I have put in COUNTLESS hours-beyond what is expected for my classroom and students. Not only has it been time away from my family, but also financially as well. I have put in so much EXTRA money into building my library, buying supplies, etc. In addition to getting my masters and classes beyond. Seriously, you have no clue.
I think you should walk a mile in someone's shoes before you pass judgement and then try to defend yourself by saying " you never bashed teachers"

you should take your own advice! "walk a amile in someone's shoes" yourself.
again - if you read the whole thread- I never said "it must be nice" that was someone replying to me -

I agree - teachers do not make enough $$ for what they do.

I think this is the first LIF "drama" I've ever gotten involved in!!! Or at least the most worked up I've ever gotten from posts.

Not to mention the reciepts to LL Weans, Educational Warehouse, LI School and Art Supply, Staples, Office Max, Wal-Mart, the bodega across the street for when a kid in your class is STARVING!, etc. etc. etc.
Oh ... and all the classes you'll take for the rest of your working life....

You are saying that you are upset that the OP is complaining about going about to school after a summer vacation... isn't this a forum where we are allowed to complain and whine about things if we want to just to get it out of our system?
In addition to my teaching job during the day, i used to work nights and sometimes sat & sundays... should i get mad at people when they complain about it being sunday and having to go back to work the next day when i used to not even get sundays off?? No way... it is my choice to work those weekends because i needed the extra money... DH has spent the entire summer teaching summer school... does he get jelous that i decided to not teach summer school or work camp and stayed home? yes... but does he tell me that i have no right to complain that summer is almost over... no way...
it is only natural for someone to not want to return to work after ANY vacation, whether it be a one day vacation or a one week vacation or a one year vacation.
and also, i worked my A$$ off as well for my LI teaching job... i didn't know anyone and wasn't "connected" to get my job either

of course i am going to complain my summer is almost over. two months off i and the thought of going back to a new class, new kids, new personalitlies, well it equals anxiety...like any job, there are complaints.
I am allowed to complain without having the oh but your teacher thrown in my face....
i am not going to go into the whole teacher defense. anyone who is NOT a teacher cannot truly understand. If I wasnt a teacher, I wouldnt either...

seriously, I was stating my opinion as you were. I nver get involved in drama, nor do I care to. I felt the need to protect my profession and the countless people I know who put their heart and soul into their job. I think you're taking me the wrong way, and I think we should just agree to disagree and that it's probably a misunderstanding.

Hmm, I'm a second year teacher with a masters in Northern Virginia... Housing costs are much like LI... Cheapest house in a desirable area down here is about $500,000... You can get a townhome in a decent area for about $400K or more.
(Just to give you an idea of cost of living).
According to 'contracted' hours I make about $29/hr.
Actual hours worked it's more like $20/hr.
And, on average, I probably spend about $50 a month on classroom supplies (more right before school).
Oh, and before you go off on benefits... I will be paying $300/month for DH and I to get Medical and Dental.
Oh, and also pay $250/month to pay off the loan for my masters (I was lucky enough that my parents paid for my undergrad).
I'm flippen RICH!

seriously - i LOVE teachers, I have much respect for the time and effort and $$ you put into your job. but I am jealous of those summer vacations! eta: and those pension plans!

Meaghan -- I think for some of us we just see it as a put down or an attack -- because we hear it so often. And for me it's like saying that the NYPD or NYFD doesn't work hard enough -- or something like that.
The stuff we go through on a daily basis, it is HARD on an physical level but even more an Emotional level.
So when people start to say anything that even remotely sounds like bashing -- the boxing gloves go ON!
