Its like... you pay through the roof for a condo (just about as much as you would pay for a house). But you are still governed by dumb HOA rules. Whats the point?

At least with a co-op... they are significantly cheaper so the money saved is usually worth dealing with the HOA issues.

You know what you are getting in to when you buy a house/condo with a Homeowners Association. There are rules and you are privy to them before you buy. It stinks that she can not show support for her husband but she knew the rules when she moved in.

It seems she knows the rules and just no longer cares about them.

No she lives in a condo. Any house that is governed by a homeowners association is considered a condo.

She probably pays HOA fees as well.

There are "condos" out there that look like completely detached housing.

I agree with Deb, maybe in NY, but in other parts of the country they aren't considered condos.

We live in a 4,000 sq/ft. single family home in Colorado and have an HOA.

Yes there are "condos" that look like detached housing but there are also communities that are HOAs. Single family houses in the same development that are not condos. Regardless, she knew the rules and needs to follow them. I'm sure there was some way for her to grieve the rule and get permission to post the sign so it was done "legally".

And there is probably more to the story. I can't imagine that she's been a model neighbor for 5 years and puts this sign up and suddenly everyone's upset.

Yes... but if you pay a HOA fee... you are "theoretically" part of a condominium. If you pay a HOA fee. What does that money go towards? It goes towards stuff that other homeowners that are part of that condominium have a "shared interest" in it.

Your house could look like a house... survey, appraisal, etc will say its a house because it is a house.

But if you pay HOA fees for shared items with other owners... you are part of a condominium.

There is no "official site". People in different parts of the country have no meaning what the word "condo" is. This is probably why they don't call them condos.

But if you pay a HOA fee... you are paying a fee that goes into a pool of "Shared interest Cash". Your "house" as you call it... has to follow certain rules. This is theoretically what separates the difference between any condo... and a single family house (the shared rules).

The whole point of my post is... call it a house all you want... if you are governed by a HOA... that ***** no matter what you call it.

My ILs live in a HOA in Florida and the only thing their money goes to is landscaping, and since they are in a "country club community" it goes toward repairing the clubhouse after hurricanes, replacing trees in common areas and maintaining the community pools, but they are totally responsible for everything on their house. They can paint it bright purple if they want.

I actually don't have any rules I have to follow. I pay $100 a year so that we can plant new flowers at the brick wall that contains the name of the subdivision (and to rebuild that wall that gets knocked down once a year by a moron driver).
Doesn't s*** so hard for me.

Exactly my point! If a tree comes down on a house four blocks away from you... that money to repair that person's tree comes out of your pocket! A lot of HOAs will also pass costly assessments if major repairs need to be done. A lot of condominiums are also responsible for street repairs! Some owners don't even realize this. If someone slips and falls... and the HOA gets sued... then the HOA is stuck with repairing. Expensive.

I'm sorry... but if I am paying "house prices"... i want the rules of the house as well (meaning... NO rules).

Thats just my opinion on why I would never buy anything with any name that has an HOA.

Re: This is one of the reasons why I don't care for condos

My community is planned. There are mansions, single family homes, smaller single family homes, 1/2 plex townhomes, condo row houses, and upstairs/downstairs condos. We all have different HOAs but they call each type of home a different name depending upon its appearance. I think when you call something a "condo" one typically thinks of 5-8 attached homes, and not a 5 bedroom 4,500 sq foot large home. Yet in my neighoborhood both fall under our HOA and are members of the clubhouse, pool, gym and we all maintain the common areas and roads.

Another point I was trying to point out. Any piece of property or "home" that has a shared interest is "condo related" (whether or not you want to call it a condo or not is your choice).

I can see what you are saying, but it's really not that big a deal. Their taxes are a lot less than ours. What do you think pays for our street repairs or when TOH plants a "free" tree on your property, which we are all entitled to as town residents?

I hope you don't plan on retiring to south Florida. You're going to have a rough time finding a place. Chat Icon

If most housing in a certain state are HOA governed... then I will have to deal with this if I want to move there.

I am just saying... if I have a choice... I would NOT go the condo route.

And while a lot of HOAs are probably fine... there are some really corrupt HOAs out there thay have passed hefty assessments onto its members.

Thats the way your HOA is set up, which is usually better. But there are a lot of HOAs that act as "mini-villages" that are responsible for their own roads and sidewalks.
