didn't mean to start "drama" on here. I was just stunned that so many of those girls said they EXPECT wedding gifts and would find it unacceptable to not get one. weddings are not an investment!

I agree -- I find the outrage for not getting gifts awful. I was in a convo over there once and someone said that if you can't afford a gift then you shouldn't go to a wedding Chat Icon

Chat Icon Chat Icon that's so freakin shallow!

OK....i Ain't gong to front and act like i wasn't anticipating the $$$$$$$

and i think that the chick who said that she didn't or anyone for that matter..is a phooney Baloney

anticipate gifts is one thing but to expect it from every single guest is another.

yeah-- I mean, I certainly wasn't shocked that we didn't get gifts from some people-- But a card would have been nice.

I think anticpate is a much better word--

Re: Another LIW post

I'm sorry - the part I still don't understand, or agree with, is when you people post about how you have to "at least" cover your plate.

Ummm - why the heck should I subsidize your wedding because you decided to spend a ton of money - that's not your guests problem, that's yours!! What you give should be dictated by your relationship with the couple and by what you can afford.

If my best friend got married in her backyard, she'd get more than a casual acquaintance who had a $150 a plate wedding.

Yes anticipate is a much better word for it, and like I said the no card would upset me alot more then no gift!! there really is no excuse ( besides it getting lost) for no card.

Here's a scenario that happened at my wedding...what would you do if you attended your dh's (not close) friend's wedding all the way up in Boston in September and gave a gift, then they show up to your wedding in October and don't give a gift....OH, and we never received a TY from them. Needless to say they did not get a TY.

We had one non gift giver. He gave us a card with nothing written in it. I mean nothing not a dear not a from NOTHING. If he hadn't seal the envelope we could have reused the card, and for that I would have sent him a TYChat Icon Since this guy was DH's friend and I left it up to him and he said no TY. So no TY went out. We did have one person also give us a decorated box. I have no idea what to do with a decorated box.Chat Icon

We had a couple of people not give us gifts, but I still sent them a thank you. It was a thank you for them taking the time to come and see me marry the man I love. I don't know anyone's financial situation, I don't know if they gave a gift but it got lost, etc. There's a million possibilities of why someone wouldn't give a gift. So everyone got a thank you because it was about them coming to share with us. And yes, I honestly believe that.

I completely agree and we did the same.

Re: Another LIW post

We enjoyed our special day and that's what mattered the most...not how much money we got. Sure there were people that didn't even give us a card (actually there were a LOT of people that didn't) and we gave them a thank you card just the same.

Re: Another LIW post

my feeling is this...the poster that said she did not "expect" gifts will get a rude awakening at her wedding.

when the shoe is on the other foot, her opinion wil change. bet a buck she'll be posting the same thread after her wedding.

I had something similar happen - we went to the wedding of what I though was a good friend of mine down in Virginia (we had gone to high school together up here). Dh and I both took time off of work, paid for a hotel for three nights, and gave a very nice gift. When we had gotten home, we found a TY in the mail from him and his wife. It was postmarked the day before the wedding. I am assuming that they mailed out generic TY's before the wedding even took place in order to "get them out of the way".

When my wedding rolled around last October, he never sent his reply card back, just told me over the ohone that he and his wife couldn't make it. They never even sent so much as a card. I have spoken to him since my wedding and he has not even made any sort of acknowledgement as to that fact that I has gotten married. That hurt me more than anything. Needless to say, he didn't ge ta TY. Chat Icon

I also had a close girlfriend from HS cancel for her fiance on me two days before the wedding, but she still came... without a card or anything. She didn't get a TY either.

here's an interesting thing that happened to us...

DH's cousin from OOT came to our wedding with her boyfriend. no gift, no card, nada. we sent thank you's to everyone whether they gave a gift or not, including her.

3 months later she sent us a check, a very small check. we never sent another thank you. was that wrong? Chat Icon

Re: Another LIW post

I believe when you invite someone to a wedding, they are not required to bring a gift. You are inviting them to participate in the celebration. For that reason, you should send a Thank you to guests for sharing the day even if they didn't bring a gift. BTW, we didn't get gifts from a lot of people at our wedding, who cares!!
This is a good reason why I don't go on LIW anymore Chat Icon

All of my non gift givers did not give us cards and for that reason did not get a TY from me or DH. My thank you to them was the dancing, drinking, food and favors. Sorry I find it so tacky to go to a wedding and not even give a card to the bride and groom regardless of your financial situation.

We also had a guest who's check bounced and we paid an additional $15 and we did not send them a TY either.

And I might be in the minority here, but if I can't afford to bring a gift to a wedding there is no way I would go. Unless the person i was very close to and felt comfortable telling them my situation. That's just who I am.

I agree a 100%. They were people who came to my wedding and did not give us a gift but I still appreciate them taking time out of their busy schedules to being part of our joyous wedding. I send everyone a thank you note whether they give something or not. We inviting people to our wedding was not about us receiving gifts but rather everyone being there to share in our wonderful day.

Re: Another LIW post

I sent everyone who came a thank you-

it was thank you for coming

if they gave us a gift which 95% of the people did- then I said thank you for coming and for the generous gift

We had 1 non-gifter, no card, no acknowledgment, nothing. I'm OK with it, my mother is not.

Did I anticipate gifts? Yes, which is why I made a photo box for the cards. Chat Icon

Did I Expect gifts from all of my guests? NO. Not in the least.

Thank you's will be sent to all guests who came to the wedding.

We had a relatively small wedding for LI standards. The people we invited were close to us, and we really wanted them to be there with us on our wedding day. They were family and close friends.

(We're still waiting for our proofs - it's only been 1 month)
