Car crashes into second floor of home, killing 1
BY CHRISTINE ARMARIO
Newsday Staff Writer

September 12, 2006, 1:37 PM EDT

A speeding car went airborne at the end of a dead-end street in Coram this morning after crashing through shrubbery and hitting a protective mound, killing the driver.

It flew over a lawn and crashed through the brick wall of an apartment complex, coming to rest in the bathroom of a second-floor apartment. Police said the driver was declared dead at the scene.

The name of the 43-year-old driver was not immediately released, and police and fire officials at the scene said there were no other injuries.

The crash occurred shortly before 9:30 a.m., but the car, leaking gasoline, was still protruding from the second floor by early afternoon.

First Assistant Chief Bob Kullak of the Coram Fire Department said the Town of Brookhaven was sending over a crane, which would remove the late-model Honda later in the day.

Crews were working to reinforce the building structure in order to remove the car, according to Officer William Fairchild, spokesman for the Suffolk County police.

Police and a witness said the car was speeding when it came to the end of Osborne Avenue and went airborne. It lodged in the second floor of an apartment at 6 Najavo Court in the North Isle Complex.

Staff writer Bill Murphy and The Associated Press contributed to this story.

I was just at the scene of the accident and I couldn't believe my eyes. I just don't see how a car when up that high, crashed on the 2nd floor and the dead end street was about 500 feet away and the fact that it was a small dirt ramp. I hate to say this but I don't it was accident!
