I dyed my hair once and that's all I plan on doing. I did it from the box (permanent) b/c it was quick and easy. My doctor said as long as the room was well ventilated it was ok.

Re: Dyeing hair when pregnant....

i actually talked to my colorist just on friday

and she told me that there are several degrees of peroxide

you can get your hair dyed just with a less degree
i believe she said 10 in stead of a full strength of 20

Re: Dyeing hair when pregnant....

But you might try asking this Q on the PG board

the ladies there seem to be very well informed about the DO's and DON'Ts of PG

You switch doctors until you get one that will let you dye your hair.Chat Icon

j/k My ob/gyn said it was ok to go for a single process throughout my entire pregnancy. Regardless of what my dr said, my hairdresser would only leave the color on for less than the regular time.

Lets just say I havent made an official announcement because its VERY early... but I was venting about HPTs on LIW because the 1st 2 I did were coming up invalid, and then - boom - BFP - which surprised the hell out of me... I was a little late, and drank this weekend, and wanted to assure myself that I was not preggers, and can still go on my HM with a clear head...

Well - lets just say my lunch hour yesterday involved me going to Walgreens 3 times, having half my coworkers reading my sticks and calling the 800 number, and then hugging and crying and telling me to go home....

Crazy day!

From what I understand highlights is safe b/c it doesnt touch your scalp and "sink" into your skin.

Re: Dyeing hair when pregnant....

no ammonia/no peroxide colour is recommended. Also, going to the salon to get colour or mani/pedis is not highly recommended as there are toxic fumes from bleach, nail products and acrylic dust that fly around.

Re: Dyeing hair when pregnant....

My doc said that there has not been a ton of research on this to truly tell if it is bad or not. She explained that the dye would have to enter my scalp, then get into my blood stream and then make it to the baby.

I color my hair about every 6 weeks and I plan to continue doing so when I get pregnant.

Re: Dyeing hair when pregnant....

Congrats! I am PG, too. My dr. said it was fine to color my hair. I am an anal-retentive nerd, and because I had read that it might be bad, and because there are no scientific studies to show that it is bad or not bad, this is what I did:

I did have my hair colored right when I had gotten pregnant, but didn't know it yet (I also went to a BT show at a club and drank a few beers that night Chat Icon ).

I waited until after my first trimester to do anything else. At this point, I had horrendous roots and no one at work knew I was PG, but I grinned and beared it every morning, and tried to forget. Apparently, it looked worse to me in the flattering lights of my bathroom than it did to anyone else...... To be honest, I was too nauseus to deal with the smell until my second tri anyway.

When I did color my hair, I had the roots "corrected" by getting the lighter stuff closer to my natural color. She used foils so the dye didn't touch my head and used a semi-permanent color which has less of the bad stuff. She did the minimum to make my hair look normal (ie the greys I have hidden underneath are still there). This way, I should not have to maintain as much as I did before.

Like I said, I am a nerd and erred on the side of I don't know what. My dr. said it was fine. One thing to remember (and this was true for me) is that when you are PG your hair takes the dye differently - so be careful and make sure the stylist knows you are PG. My SIL dyed her hair regularly while PG and I have a gorgeous 1 yr old neice, happy and healthy. I think you just have to make the decision that you are comfy with (as with all "pregnancy rules" - and there are a lot of them!).

Good luck and congrats!
PS - You are an 06er, too right? I was (and still am) more of a lurker than a poster, but I was on the 06 boards a lot. Are we the first 06er PGs????? My wedding was in Jan and I got my BFP in April!
