A History of Violence

I was so disappointed in this movie...I thought it could have been so much more.

Yeah, I have heard a lot of people say that they wanted to see more about his past. While that would have been interesting IMO, the whole point of the movie was that he had left his past behind him. I appreciated that we saw only what was absolutely necessary for us to understand what was going on.

Oh, I got all that - however in the end we see that he didn't leave anything behind - something that imbedded just can't be left behind, it's a part of who you are...thus your history.

I just wasn't impressed by the performances. I absolutely hated the wife. And that scene in the stairway was just gratuitous - and awful at that.

For a foreign film, I would choose Cinema Paradiso ... it is one of my favorite coming of age stories... a man coming full circle.

I had to watch A Few Good Men for a class on ethics, then we had a very thought provoking discussion.

I totally agree. I think it just got really cheesy!!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

And the wife SO needs a shower!

Probably a bit trite, but:

The Killing Fields
The Deer Hunter
Apocalypse Now
Trainspotting
A Civil Action
To Kill a Mockingbird

Re: Thought provoking movies

I forgot Insomnia & One Hour Photo.

Also Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless mind. The film is mediocre, but the discussions could be quite interesting.

Re: Thought provoking movies

-Requiem for a Dream (sp?) is the most twisted movie I have ever seen, and I always thought that it should be shown in a classroom...it's probably the best "this is how bad things can get when you do drugs" movie ever made.

-Shindler's List, Life is Beautiful, the Pianist, and Shoah = all holocaust insired movies, Shoah is more of a documentary......

Re: Thought provoking movies

Thanks everyone. Now I have a great list to work with. I am teaching a class called College 101 for incoming freshmen but I also run informal support groups and general get togethers for the students and like to show movies with meaning.
