Re: What does it mean when you have a low progesterone level?

You usually are given supplements to help you sustain the pregnancy. That happened to me.

Re: What does it mean when you have a low progesterone level?

It means that the hormone that supports the baby in the beginning of pregnancy is low. I had to take suppositories for it for my first trimester and everything turned out fine.

Re: What does it mean when you have a low progesterone level?

Know that there are two ways this can be helped. The frst, as Marcie listed is to tkae a suppository. The second, which is usually used in IVF, is to take a SHOT of PIO (this could be daily) PIO is progesteron in oil and is an intramuscular shot.

I was told in the beginning my Progesterone levels were low and was offered to take replacement therapy for it. We had heard good and bad about it and opted NOT to take and now are expecting a little Princess any moment now Chat Icon

some dr.'s believe (mine included) progesterone supplements just prolong the inevitable. i would have done the same in your case...

it all depends how low is low. progesterone is needed to sustain the pregnancy.

Re: What does it mean when you have a low progesterone level?

interesting opinions. i felt the opposite- i would do anything i could do medically to sustain my pregnancy. i took suppositories throughout my first trimester due to low progesterone levels and the baby is strong and doing very well. i'll be 20 weeks on saturday.

I absolutely agree with you. If I got pg, I would stand on my head for 9 months if it meant sustaining the pregnancy. I don't believe in any of that "meant to be" stuff Chat Icon

it's not necessarily "meant to be" stuff, some dr.'s believe that the supplements act as a placebo and that they don't affect the outcome. if the pregnancy was "meant to be" then it would sustain itself without the supplements even if the progesterone was low. if it wasn't "meant to be" then the supplements would just prolong a mc.

it's just a view that some dr.'s have. my dr. stated she would give me supplements if i wanted them, but personally does not believe they necessarily help.

Re: What does it mean when you have a low progesterone level?

I certainly don't want to get into a debate on Ambersmom's thread asking an innocent question. But, since I do IVF, I HAVE to take progesterone.

But, if I got pg naturally and was told that I had low progesterone and didn't supplement, and then lost the pregnancy, I would always wonder, what if? I would certainly not think, "Oh, it was meant to be." JMO

i'm not getting into a debate, i am just sharing information and personal experience, people can take it or leave it.

you are entitled to your views/beliefs as am i. i was just simply clarifying that within the medical community there seems to be some debate as to whether or not progesterone supplements help or simply act as a placebo.

now i know nothing about IVF, and if that requires different protocol feel free to share that info!

I'm not saying that you're getting into a debate, just didn't want this thread to turn ugly.

Yes, absolutely, everybody is entitled to their beliefs. In the past 4 years, I have been to many drs, some considered the best in the world, and I have never heard that progesterone acts as a placebo.

Here is a little info on progesterone if anyone is interested

Anon- Is it an OB that thinks that the progesterone acts as a placebo? I have been to quite a few RE's and quite a few OB's over the last few years while we struggeled with infertilty and none of my doctors ever mentioned this to me.

Re: What does it mean when you have a low progesterone level?

I completely disagree that progesterone acts as a placebo. Before I had Alex I had a miscarriage at 6 weeks, and before that, I truly believe I had another miscarriage, but I was on my honeymoon and there was no way to verify either way. So, when I got pregnant with Alex I was TERRIFIED. I headed straight to the doctor and he put me on progesterone just as a precautionary measure, just in case the reason for the miscarriages was low progesterone. He also took my blood that day to test my levels, and as it turns out, later that week I got a call from the Dr.'s office telling me that my levels were very low, but thankfully, I was already on the progesterone because my doctor acted quickly. At my next visit they tested me again and my numbers were totally normal - actually, above normal, and my Dr. told me that was because of the supplements. It was a b!tch taking them because they exaggerate your symptoms (particularly the m/s), but I would have done anything to sustain the pregnancy. And, now, I have the most beautiful, chubby, healthy, happy little girl, and for that, I can thank modern medicine Chat Icon

yup, and she's not the only one i have heard this from. maybe it's something new? who knows...

with RE's and infertility i'm sure it's a totally different story.

Re: What does it mean when you have a low progesterone level?

I have never been on them before I just dont understand why a woman WOULDNT take them if it could possibly help sustain her pregnancy...

The meant to be theory cant be why some woman wouldnt take it..could it really?
I mean when our children get sick we take them to the doctor for medicine.. should we not take them and figure.. well..if they are meant to god forbid get worse and die then it was just " meant to be"?

i had a similar experience. one mc and one chemical pregnancy prior to my current one. i was angry at the medical group i was seeing at the time because they never gave me the option of supplements. when i switched practices i was ready to take extra precautionary measures, but when i had futher discussions with my dr. was unclear what i would do if the same situation arose. my numbers turned out okay and nothing was needed, however i don't know what i would have done (i lean towards not taking them) if the same situation presented itself. i was just happy to hear that my dr. presented me with options this time around regardless of her personal beliefs...

creating a new life and fighting a cold i think are two extremes. some may believe that a low level is natures way of rejecting something that could potentially be problematic down the road. i am undecided as to what i would do, but it has nothing to do with me not ever wanting the best for my child.

Re: What does it mean when you have a low progesterone level?

I had a MC and the medical community did not even think about testing my progesterone. Maybe I could have saved my PG. I, personally have realized how many Dr's are willing to let pregnancies that involve bleeding to end without any testing. I was not offered progesterone and I DO think What if? Next time I get pg I will be asking for my pregesterone to be checked and if it is low I will be taking a supplement. JMO

My OB feels the same way as anon's. I had a m/c in July at 5 1/2 weeks, got pregnant right after and begged for progesterone supplements since i thought this was common practice. My Dr told me the same, in my case, there was no cause for the m/c and that progesterone supplements could just prolong the inevitable.

BUt he also explained, some woman do have healthy embroyo's but their body cannot sustain the uterine wall long enough til the placenta takes over-hence the need for progesterone.

In my case, my LP was normal, and my m/c was most likely cause by a chromosomal abnormality, and that cannnot be prevented by progesterone and that case it would prolong my uterus passing the embryo leading to a m/c.

This pg, I was a nervous wreck, but here i sit almost 33 weeks pg, fat, happy, and getting beat up by my little girl, all without progesterone supplements.

It's really a case by case basis, and up to you and your dr.

Yes it is a case by case basis. But above your wrote that your m/c was MOST LIKELY due to CA which to me means that there was no testing done to be sure. Just because your LP was not short does not mean that your progesterone was not low.
I'm not saying women shouldn't take it, I just don't understand dismissing it.
