He went to the doctor's yesterday and weighs 8lbs 3 oz so at least he gained more and the doctor was pleased at the gain. It's not AR cuz he is not in any kind of pain. He's just a fussy eater and unfortunately that's what have to deal with. The doctor thinks a feeding should take 20 minutes...On what planet??? If it takes us an hour to feed him then so be it whatever, as he gets those 24 ounces in. We'll take anything between 20-24 at this point.
He actually had two 5 ouncers yesterday but with bigger gaps in the hours that we fed him. It took an hour but hey at least he got it in and last night at 2:30 am we fed him and he had another 5 ounces in 35 mins. we could not believe it.
We also switched the nipple size from 2 to 3, hey we're desperate. So far he seems fine with it. (he's 5 weeks today by the way) It was a little messy at first but now it's a little better I guess he has to get used to it.
I'm glad he's doing better. But 20 mins for a bottle? I agree - what planet is he living on? LOL
My DD is 10wks old and usually takes a 5 oz bottle. But there are times when she only takes 3 oz. How can you force a baby to eat? You can't. Sometimes it takes us an hour to get the bottle in her. Kids are different but they will eat when they are hungry. My friends DS would take 5 ox in 10 mins. Crazy! Her other son would take over an hour to get 3 oz so it all depends on the baby.
Hang in there and as long as the baby is gaining and the ped is happy then everything is fine I think.
Also...when my DD was 5 wks we were lucky if she took a full 4oz at each feeding.

I'm not saying that a feeding can't be done in 20 minutes, it can but it depends on the baby. He made it seem like all babies take 20 minutes. Mine did in the very beginning when he was only drinking 1-2 oz meals. The more there is to eat the longer it's going to take. But whatever. Like you said as long as he is wetting his diapers and pooping which he does. What if he only wets his diaper a little does that still count as a "wet diaper"...
What if a diaper is a really heavy wet one, how can you tell how many times he went. Does it still count as one wet diaper.

Glad to hear that he's gained weight. It used to take an hour to feed Joseph too. He used to spit up a lot. Then I read a book on feedings -I was misreading his crying for signs of hunger. Sometimes he was tired or overstimulated. It never occured to me since my MIL & mother made me completely paranoid with "He looks like he lost weight." comments. Eventually I told them to keep their comments to themselves.
I was paranoid for a long time about Joseph losing weight since he was a preemie & coudln't maintain his weight & temperature in the hospital. Instead of counting how many ounces he takes and driving yourself mad, I would consider counting wet diapers. It's easier. That is the only thing you need to be worrying about. If they're getting enough food, he'll have enough wet diapers.
Yeah sometimes you can get the signs mixed up but he puts his hands in his mouth and even attempts to eat his bib when he starts getting upset that is...LOL But he still eats the way he does. It all depends on his mood. Thank god my mom is around to help.
