Our trip to NC *UPDATED WITH PICS*

So DH and I got here Fri night. we spent 7 hours yesterday with a RE agent drving around Raleigh and surrounding areas. we looked at 4 houses. 2 established, 6 year old homes and 2 in a brand new development.

the areas around here are nice. we're staying in Cary and have seen Wake Forest, Raleigh, N Raleigh, Fuquay Varina, Holly Springs & of course, Cary. Cary is a much more "mature area", from what we have seen. not much in the way of newer homes. Raleigh, N Raleigh and Wake Forrest have a mix of established areas and brand new developents are everywhere! The houses we have seen are all beautiful, although not as large as we thought they were going to be. But to be fair, we're looking in a low price range. you can buy a "mansion" here for $350K-$400K.

Out of what we have seen so far, we really like the N Raleigh area! lots of hussle bustle, something I feel I need as a NY'er. lol

there is no shortage of shopping or restaurants here. and they have Macy's here! Chat Icon Chat Icon they have a Saks 5th Ave too.

we're going to look at a different area today... I will try and update later or when we get back.

UPDATE: ok, so we spent all day yesterday in Cary. boy was I wrong about Cary not having new housing! we ventured into an area we didn't see yet (near Morrisville) and Chat Icon Chat Icon brand new GORGEOUS developments are popping up everywhere! we specifically looked at KB Homes. one of the developments was KB & Martha Stewart homes. WOW! just wow... absolutely gorgeous!!!!!! link to the development

the model homes were just unreal! ranging in size from 1700 sq feet all the way to 4000. The developments around here are very unique. they all seem to have not only single family homes, but townhomes as well. all of the housing dev. are HOA's with community pools, tennis, playgrounds and some even have their own stores. they're like little villages. it's really amazing.

DH and I are so overwhelmed by the amount of trees here. everything is so lush and just beautiful. there are lots of rolling hills too.

We can easily spend another week here checking everything out. but we're leaving today Chat Icon

as for any decisions, DH and and I have a lot to think about! we both agree that we can absolutely see ourselves living here.

oh and here's a tid bit we heard from a lot of folks down here... no one in this area is unemployed unless they want to be.

I'm so happy we made this trip! even though it was a short stay, it definitely gave us an idea about the area. So for all of you who are thinking about it, I highly recommend that you come and visit.

Chat Icon

PS: here's a link to a housing community in Wake Forest that we saw

a little pricey for the Raleigh area, but this place was unreal! Chat Icon

Here are some pics of our trip

Thanks for the info! I have have a couple of questions, since DH and I are considering that area. How are the schools? What are the property taxes? I've heard that the average is around 3,000 a year.

the property taxes here are between $1K and $3K, it varies widely. the $3K we were told was more for homes that are $600K - so in Raleigh that would mean an estate Chat Icon

the schools here are good from what we were told, we have to do some more of our own research. because of the HUGE migration down here, some schools started staggering the kids semesters while keeping the school open year round. many people including the RE agent we worked with send their kids to private school. she said she spends $600 per kid, per month.

I actually thought that was reasonable. from what she said it was a school where affluent parents send their kids and when you think about daycare costs... well, it's $1000 a month at my job, and that is subsidized!

I am so happy to hear that your trip was a success! Chat Icon I never had any doubts personally, but I wanted it to be as wonderful as possible for you and your DH...and it looks like it was! Chat Icon

I have to say, I don't know how you didn't bid on this house...because I would have taken it in a heartbeat! Chat Icon

was it a private HS or elementary? because it's almost as expensive as my college per month Chat Icon

but when you have such a large home for such a low cost (and much lower property taxes), it works out better there anyway!

well my dear, this house is probably in the high $300's - low $400's... the real estate in Cary and Raleigh is higher than GA's... sadly Chat Icon

if we both had jobs, you know we would have bid though! Chat Icon

the RE agent has 2 kids, 11 & 14. So I guess that's elementary & middle?

she said her husband is a VP for a big company down there, she clearly works for the fun of it, not because she has to. which is the case a lot from what we have heard. UGH! I'm so jealous!! Chat Icon

It figures that I would like it!! Chat Icon Chat Icon The GA market is really picking up...and that makes me happy AND sad...because we want to move to a custom built home in the future (10 yrs maybe?) and we'll prob have to live in the woods to afford it!! Chat Icon That house is all brick and would prob cost in the $300's here too. It's not what it was a year ago. But what you get for the money is a huge difference from LI.

Love ALL the homes...KB Homes is a great builder too! Chat Icon

I wish you much luck! Chat Icon
