new to the site - I have adopted from China-ADDED PICS

We brought our precious daughter home in September. She just turned 2 March 1st.

If anyone has any questions, I will do all I can to answer with what we had been through in our adoption process. It was a very smooth process for us Chat Icon

I just found this site today, but I know a couple of people on here.

Hi Liz! Welcome to the boards. I'm so happy more people are finding out about the adoption thread on this board. Congrats on your adoption and thanks for your offer on giving advice. We'd love to see pictures and hear about your adoption journey. Hearing from people who have already gone through the journey is what keeps me inspired these days. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: new to the site - I have adopted from China

If I ever figure out how to post pics, I will. If you want, I can e-mail pics to anyone who wants to see pics of Diana.

We were LID 1/05, referral 7/05 and traveled to China 9/05. We left NY for Bejing 9/10, stayed in Bejing for 2 days, flew to Diana's province Jiangsu and Gotcha was 9/13, final adoption in China 9/14. We were lucky, the process was shorter while we were doing it. It seems right after our group, China slowed down for some reason. Actually, when we started the process the wait was about 1 year from LID to gotcha. They started going faster for some reason, and have now slowed down again. China seems to do this here and there, so they may get faster again.

Diana was 16 months at referral and 18 months at Gotcha. She is an absolute joy. Very smart..too smart.. lol

She turned 2 on March 1st, and is a typical 2 year old. She is so loving and loves to give hugs and kisses. She also has a great sense of humor and loves to tease us as well (especially her Daddy)

Welcome! We are adoption from China as well and I'd love to hear anything you have to share...tips about travel, any bonding issues, etc.

We were LID on 10/27/05 and are now in the awful waiting game and thanks to the darn slow down most likely won't travel until December.

What agency did you use?

To Post Pics:

Hit Reply.

On the bottom, you will see a section called Attach Pictures. You can attach them one by one there. If you can't (if it's saying the image is too large to post), click on image resizer above and they will email you a small resolution picture to post. Then you can repost. Real easy. If not, FM please! Thanks!

anything you want to know, feel free to ask. If I just type, we will have pages and pages..lol

Travel tips: honestly, we did not find the travel to be very difficult. We flew out of Newark on Continental so we could do a non-stop to Bejing, and that was great. A lot less travel time. We booked the lst 2 seats on the plane, which was nice b/c there was an empty spot where the 3rd seat would normally be. So we got a bit of extra room to get up and stretch and just stand up for a few minutes here and there. Coming home we flew from Guangzhou to Bejing, then again non-stop from Beijing to Newark. We did not get Diana a seperate seat, but we lucked out. We booked bulkhead seats, and there was no one else in our row, so we got the 3 seats anyway. Also with the bulkhead there was so much extra room in front. The flight attendants gave us a lot of extra blankets and pillows and I made a bed in front of us for Diana so she could get a good sleep. It worked out great.

Don't overpack. Really anything we needed we could get there. One day our guide too us to a department store (kind of like Macy's) then to Wal-Mart and McDonalds (too funny). Wal-Mart had everything, just like here. We bought extra diapers, formula, soda for our room, Milk, fruit, wipes, Crest toothpaste. We also bought Diana a stroller there, so we did not have to bring one with us. We did bring it home and still use that one sometimes. I would check with the agency once you know what province your baby is from and see what types of stores they have by the hotel and where they plan your trips. Just in case there are not as many stores there. Diana is from Jiangsu, and honestly, it was like walking around Manhattan.

Bonding Issues: we really did not have any. Oh, believe me she was not thrilled when they handed her to us. She was 18 months, and I think being a little older made it a little harder on her. She was so attached to her "auntie", and she was attached to Diana as well. She cried for the first 1-1/2 hrs. Our first family picture, that they take there in the Civil Affairs Office, she is still screaming.. poor baby. Once we got in the van to go back to the hotel she calmed down, and started to come around. She bonded with me much quicker than my DH, but they say that they do usually pick one they bond quicker with, it could just as easily ahve been him. She still had in the hotel, for about the first week or so what we called "sad moments", just this sad look on her face, or light crying for no reason. We figures she was missing her caregivers and her friends. We would just give her lots of hugs and kisses. By the time we left her province, she really wasn't doing that anymore.

Once in Guangzhou at the White Swan she was great. Totally attached to us. She loved it there, we walked around a lot and we played in the big playroom with all the other kids. You have to go to Lucy's when you get there. They serve "american" food, and I tell ya, it was one of the best burgers I ever had. We ate there a few times, and liked it every time.

Anything else just ask, as you can see, I love talking about China and our precious daughter.

We used Great Wall out of Texas. We were mostly happy with them until travel came along. If we do it again, I would not use the same agency
