Spinoff FHF : Do you ask people to take their shoes off at home?

In Fh's apt we take our shoes off most of the time and our friends follow our lead. If they ask if they have to, we tell them they don't have to but we always do. he has white carpeting, so we try to avoid the damage. At my mom's house she doens't really like shoes on her carpeting either.

We dont , our apt only has one carpet and it isn't so nice , but if we went to someones house and they asked us to I wouldn't mind all.

We always take our shoes off...and so does all my family when they come over and visa versa. When company comes over I never asked them I even tell them they dont have to if I see they are taking their shoes off. I was raised to take off my shoes when entering a home...so for mew it is just a habit

nope, first of all I have all hardwood floors, second of all I think it's rude to expect people to undress as guests.
If I had a child, I may consider it if they are crawling around, but that remains to be seen.

we dont because we have a disgusting old carpet in our apartment from God knows how long ago.

I presume that one day when I have a house I will have a nice new carpet and ask people to take their shoes off. But if they dont or they dont want to, thats fine with me. Its a carpet - made to be walked on.

In most of the common areas in our house we have hardwood. The only rooms that have carpet is the guest room downstairs and the bedrooms upstairs. The only room I try not to walk with shoes in is the baby's room. He's not crawling yet, but I'd like to preserve his carpet as much as I can.

We do but when we have company we do not ask them to take them off but my mom does everytime she comes over.

DH and I are both shoe wearers. I hate being asked to take off my shoes in someone's home.

Only when it's muddy out or snowy. But I leave a piece of old ripped up carpet in my kitchen for everyone to leave their boots/shoes on. Those situations are normally when people don't mind taking off their shoes. I will at anyone's house if they ask or I know they have new carpeting

We only ask people to take off their shoes if they are very wet, muddy or snowy.

We don't but we have mats before you walk in the door and right after.

I would never ask someone to take their shoes off to come in the house. If they would like to for comfort reasons they are 100% welcome to do that. We have a mat by the door in case of inclimate weather.

I would of course comply with the request but I really wouldn't love walking around with no shoes in someone else's house.

No, I don't. I don't feel comfortable in someone else's house with no shoes on, so I couldn't ask someoen to do that here.

I read something in Miss Manners recently that said unless you live in a culture where that is expected (like Japan) then it is very rude to ask guests to take their shoes off in your home. You should make guests feel comfortable in your home, and asking them to take their shoes off doesn't usually send that message.

I agree. If you are that worried about your carpet, maybe entertaining is not your thing. I don't mind if people want to do it on their own, though.

We don't ask people to in our apartment. It's funny though. DH grew up in a house where they did not remove their shoes when they went inside and I grew up in a house where we did take them off when we went inside. We used to get mad at eachother. He'd be like "Why are you taking your shoes off?" and I'd be like "Why AREN'T you?"
