Reading...Hottest thing in Hollywood for now

So does it bother anyone else that one main reason books get read in this country is because a celebrity like Oprah promotes it.

Don't get me wrong, I think Oprah's book of the month is genius to getting America reading and thinking,

but

Why aren't people just picking up a book and reading on their own? I was reading way before Oprah thought it was cool.

I don't know if I'm making sense. It was just something that was on my mind today.

I've been an avid reader since I can remember. I'm not good at picking & choosing "good" books. So I look to Oprah & NY Times best sellers to take me in the direction.

I agree with you!!! She has done a good job, but public libraries are the greatest source for books and learning, not Oprah!

I remember when her selection was Anna Karenina and a patron came into my library asking for it. We had an older copy, and she insisted it was not the same book since "it didn't look like Oprah's copy."

That's really sad.

I do look at what she's suggesting, but I won't just go by her opinion, because that's all it is...her opinion!! I like reading titles, and summaries and then form my opinion. Sometimes I like my choice, and sometimes the summary at the back of the book is the only thing remotely interesting about any particular book.

I love reading too, and have always loved it from when I was little but I don't follow Oprah's book club

I remember when she did East of Eden, I figured everyone had read that in high school

You make perfect sense. I don't know why it is, but it has been that way forever so thank goodness someone with a following is encouraging people to read. One of my girlfriends made fun of me for reading at the beach and then again made fun of me because I brought a book with me on my honeymoon - as if the only thing I could possibly want to do for the entire time was have sex. Chat Icon I don't think she was convinced even after I told her I needed something to keep my occupied during the flight..

I have been reading since I was a little girl. I can still remember the 1st book that my Mom bought me. When ever I travel I have at least 3 books with me. Thankfully my friends read - they read more than I do.

I LOVE THE LIBRARY! I haven't read one of Oprah's books AFTER she recommended them yet. I usually have read it first.

Re: Reading...Hottest thing in Hollywood for now

I have always enjoyed reading and yes, i think it is sad that the only reason people read is because a celebrity endorces it. My sister is famous for only reading "famous" books...and she never finishes them!

I always have my book with me no matter where I go. My DH says that I would pay more attention to him if he had newsprint on his face Chat Icon

Whenever I buy presents for friend's kids, I buy them books...every kid should be encouraged to read and there are not enough parents who do that.

Re: Reading...Hottest thing in Hollywood for now

I am a huge reader as well and rarely read any of the Oprah books. Occasionally I will but I don't make a point of it. I literally have 100,000 worth of books in my house not kidding so I try to go to the library. I get tips on books from here too. My method for choosing is read the front cover if it sounds good I get it. I have been pretty lucky with that so far. I think the reason I love reading is my Mom had me at the library since I was 3

I love to read! I think its great that Oprah is influencing people to read, nothing wrong with that! It's a common fact that celebrities influence our lives in many different areas...at least she is doing something good, ya know?

But I do agree that people should read more and not just what Oprah says....

I just picked up "Night" by Elie Weisel. I have been meaning to read it for a while now and I saw it in Costco, so I bought it...the back cover had an Oprah's Book Club sticker on it...I didn't even know until I got it home. Now its EVERYWHERE.
Great book.....and important, too. I think it teaches us a lot about the dark side of humanity....

I do that too!! Especially with my little SILs. At first I think they hated that I would only give them books, but they could barely read and I just couldn't give them yet another barbie doll knowing this. Now they ask me for books instead. Chat Icon

I felt that way too about the real young kids. But, if they are 6 months until about 2 years old, I get them learing toys..like those talk along books or leap frog things. they love thos! I just can't see spening all that money on toys that they con't learn anything from!

I was the kid under the covers with the flashlight.... Now I don't read as much as I used to, it comes in spurts. But I neve watch Oprah so I have no idea what she recommends...never how I made my choices. I don't rely on a celebrity to tell me what's good...but I do love to get recommendations from friends!!

Oh MrsMcK, what's next on my list after I finish "Inconceivable"? I want to read that book you mentioned about the matador...!

I brought books on my HM too. Chat Icon

I love to read and I always have. Ninety percent of the books in the US are bought by about 10% of the population. Our society is becoming more and more "aliterate"; people can read but choose not to.

If it takes someone like Oprah to get people to read, I think that's great. Unfortunately I think the people she is influencing is still hugely outnumbered by the people who want to be morons like Paris Hilton. Chat Icon

I no longer ask my students how many books they own; the answer depresses me. It's usually one or two. Chat Icon

I can't stand Paris Hilton. I have many friends who really admire her and I just don't get it. What really ****** me off was when Jessica Simpson stated once that she's not really that dumb, but that she plays it up more because men find that sexy. I wanted to strangle her.

Kara, it's called Death & the Sun: A Matador's Season in the Heart of Spain, by Edward Lewine. To be honest, I didn't finish it. Chat Icon but what I did read was really interesting. The main character's grandfather was also a matador and killed by a particular bull. It's the grandson's responsibility to now kill this bull. Lots of other stuff too; Let me know how it is. Sorry but if a celebrity uses their fame to get people to READ....why judge it?

We are always bashing celebs for what they say, do and wear...I think this is a positive aspect that should be commended...

SHe isn't forcing america to read HER books? People who read can still go to that library or bookstore down the corner...Chat Icon

ETA...didn't think this was the "hottest thing in hollywood" right now either...
Oprah has been doing this for many YEARS now...

Re: Reading...Hottest thing in Hollywood for now

Maybe what we find frustrating is that there are many "unsung heroes" doing great things for literacy (or the environment, or human rights to give other examples) who don't get the recognition they deserve. When a celebrity attaches their name to a cause, it seems like the general public accepts their views as the "end all, be all".
