How about Manorville, you can get a huge piece of property with a victorian in your price range. If you live in the western area of Manorville, it shouldn't be much more than 45 minutes or so to Huntington. Alot of homes are close to both Sunrise or the LIE. If you were to live close to Sunrise, it is an easy shot up Nichollos Rd to the LIE (only one light between the LIE and Sunrise) to head over to Huntington. Plus, the South Manor SD is great. Big Beautiful brand new high school and all new schools being built because of all the developing.

If you look at Miller Place or Mt. Siani depending on where you are since they are so far north it could take a while to get to the LIE and I hear in winter the roads up there can be pretty bad because it is so hilly and curvy. Although, I love the landscape of the north shore.

Good Luck with your search.

ETA - IMO some SD's I would avoid would be William Floyd and Longwood.

No, Yaphank is not a good area. It borders Gordon Heights which is supposedly a bit of a rough neighborhood. If schools are a concern, go for 3 Village, Mt. Sinai, Wading River. I live in the Sachem district and it is a good district. Not the best. You can get into a good neighborhood with that kind of money. Even Smithtown or Hauppauge. That's not terribly far if you commute to the city or Nassau.
