Prayers please UPDATE pg 2
My grandfather was admitted to the hospital yesterday and after his angiogram today, unfortunately, it was determined that one of his valves is not working and he needs open heart surgery. They want to do the surgery by Fri but the latest, by Tues -- date and time are up in the air. Needless to say, we are all very upset and praying for the best. We are all blessed that he has made it to 85 without any major health problems. The doctors said if he were not in such good shape or if he did not have such low cholesterol and blood pressure, he would have been dead already. Very scary to hear but on the other hand, his 91 year old sister had a stroke 2 months ago and is now walking again against all odds so he comes from very strong genes. He is optimistic and hopeful, as always, so attitude and determination are on his side. That said, he is 85 and this is terrifying so we are all on pins and needles. He is a wonderful, wonderful man and means so much to so many. Prayers are of course appreciated.

You grandfather seems VERY strong for an 85 year old. It does seem like strong genes run in his family. It must be soooo nerve-racking but what I always try to remember and what is so incredible is that these surgeons do these risky surgeries every day. It boggles my mind and God knows I'd still be a nervous wreck.
I had a colleague several years ago who was much younger than your grandfather but in poor physical and physiological health. He had heart surgery and came back stronger than before.

similar thing happened to my grandfather last year - he was strong as a bull, but 80 years old. he went through a long stay in the hospital with complications with his lungs after his heart surgery. unfortunately he never made it out of there and i am still shocked by it... but he needed the surgery and he came through the actual surgery beautifully - after the surgery, his heart was never a problem - it was all his lungs from years of smoking (which he had quit 30 years before the surgery, but it still effected him)
i will keep him in my thoughts and prayers. you will be amazed at what these doctors can do, and how strong they really are... we met so many people older than him that went through the surgery and were up walking the following day... Amazing!
