PA is just where if fell to. Is that a terrible thing to happen in your state...sure. But i believe nobody in PA was hurt by that. IMO the families of the people on that flight are the ones who really felt that impact of that airplane hijack....
NO and 9/11 can be compared in that they were both terrible tragedies that killed thousands of people that lived in the state in which it occured...
BOth were DEVESTATING events
100% agred both terrible tradgedies but two toatlly diferent in many ways and levels.
Pa might noit have had physical damage but NY did and so did dc and the peopel of these places are remined of it everyday.. not to say the poeple who lost people in pa arent suffereing of course they are but on a whole i think a person in another state , unless they sugffered aloss, undewrstands teh impacct it had.. just talkign to my dad alone a person who lived here 55 out of 67 years of his life just doenst get it.

in theory, i can understand what youre saying, BUT, i agree with Red, that i think its just a natural reaction to say 'smile' when youre about to take a pic. I cant imagine the father saying 'ok, now Frown for the camera" 
and, i can also understand wanting to be IN the pic... as devastating of a situation as it was, it IS still a part of history- and its human nature to want to capture yourself/your children in something that was so significant in our country.
we saw TONS and tons of pics of people at ground zero ever since 9/11. Just b/c these pics werent considered 'photojournalism', i dont think that makes them completely inappropriate.

We don't like people on our turf.. we don't like tourists. period.
Yes- it annoys me to see people smiling in front of World Trade Center- but then again- i take the path from WTC all the time- and while I don't take photos in front of it smiling- I do act as I always act-I kiss my husband, I'll dance with him on the platform at 1am in the morning a little tipsy, I'll play my video game on my cell phone while waiting (In case anyone didn't realize the Path is actually IN the WTC hole). I think it a beautiful testament to life that it goes on- and that no matter what happens to us as a country- we can still laugh too- not just cry- we can find beauty in tragedy- I think we have to.
There's going to be a time when those holes aren't there anymore, they'll still be in some of our hearts- but the rest of the world will have moved on, 9/11 will be a chapter in a history book- it's sad to think of it that way.
But at least that family smiling in front of WTC took the time to really see it and go to it! It is with people that visit the site and take the photos and tell the story to their friends that the memory of what happened on 9/11 will live..
although i dont agree on everytign you said it was very nicely put.

I read through this entire thread, and I agree with things that each one of you said.. too much to quote here..
Unfortunately I don't think you will ever get a large group of people to agree on ANYTHING having to do with 9/11 or Ground Zero in general Be that New Yorkers or not

I have never even been to Ground Zero. I just can't bring myself to go there, and if I saw that happening, i think it would really upset me.

Although a lot of people responded to this post, I would have to say that I agree with Noel on the original post. I have been there MANY times and each and every time I see something like this. "smile for the camera" is just wrong. I dont know what you would say in a situation like this but "smile" in my opinion is just tasteless.

I think its a matter of respect, plain and simple. I think its a very personal opinion and 9/11 is one of the things in life where no one can dictate how you feel about it or circumstances surrounding it. To each his own I guess.

It makes me sick to see that people view it as a tourist site! I knew quite a few people who died there including a family member whose body was never recovered (nor were any of his remains ) To me that is sacred ground not a tourist site

As Im reading through this whole post- about sacred ground- do you know most of long island is sacred ground? Indian graves? that probably most of our houses are on top of or buildings and lots. What about those sacred grounds? Like I said before I find it weird and strange to say out loud "smile" because I was brought up that way to respect the dead,but I wouldnt get all bent if I heard someone else doing it. I have to agree with Red and DJPill that some are being overly sensitive about this. How is it really affecting YOU? Does it really matter- how one choses to live? Even if you were a block away and right in it? The more I think about it- Im glad people are visiting it and keeping it "alive" the terrorist wouldnt want that- they want to "kill" us and by letting stuff like saying smile get to you is doing just that to your insides. I wouldnt get angry, I would stand proud to be an american and part of NY and see that people are taking an interest in what happened and most of all sharing it with his kids. so he said smile- its not the worst thing in the world to say there- I can think of other things that could be said to be really overly sensitive about. Life goes on.

WHY....it was before and will always be. Months after this happened it became a tourist spot. They set up viewing areas. So you can't blame people who come to look.
THis isn't a NEW concept. LOTS of memorials are tourist spots all over the world.

I have always felt that way. I worked at 120 Broadway and saw the WTC site everyday and it always boggled my mind how many people did this. I don't even know if I would want myself in a picture. When DH and I went to the concentration camps we only took pictures of the sites, none with us in it.

ok i never said noone should visit it I said i can totally see visiting.. helloo i was visiting it too... and i even understand taking a picture so that you can keep this as part of history show your kids and grandkids and say heres what it looked like from 9/11/01- wehenever thet finally complete new buildings and now look at the new building s thata re there. but not say oh heers a picture of my four kids in front of it. and to say i am overly sensitive b/c i was a block a way is crazy.. maybe if you uwere there or lost someone ( which i didnt loose anyone personally but knew a few people who died) you would understand.. also i wasnt even going to go there but like mommy2alex said would you think it was odd if someone was posing in a concentration camp and taking pics there? i really didnt want to bring that up but since it did come up.. thoughts....

When I was in Hawaii last year there were hundreds of American tourists taking pictures and saying SMILE. Now is that not considered wrong because it was 60 years ago? That site is a living grave with the bodies of the soldiers STILL in the ship underwater.
People go to Gettysburg everyyear where the worst battle and loss of life on American soil took place. Is it wrong that they visit. I don't see people in Gettysburg up in arms, hell tourists even pay to watch the bloodiest battle in US history be re-enacted.
Point is life does go on. People will visit, will take pictures, will remember. That site is also a place to remember the great heroics and bravery of the American people, the firefighters and police. A real testement to American spirit, and if people remember all of that with a smile on their face or a tear in their eye it doesn't bother me...at least they are remembering and will never forget.

I don't think people who are from NY PA AND DC are the only ones who can realize the horror and saddness of 9/11. People on that PA flight weren't from PA they were from Boston and California mostly. THOSE people felt the loss more than the people of PA...NO?
And what resulted fro 9/11 was thousands of troops going into Afganistan and then Iraq ..Where many many many people died This is a country wide thing IMO.
And yes i do agree that some people cannot understand what it was like on 9/11 and there after...Just like i probably cannot understand the true travesty that occurred in NO. Not like the people of NO do anyway. IMO that is kinda natural
Which is why I qualified what I said by saying "some." (And I do realize that later in the post I said most, but in reality I know that most is a stronger word and was not really what I was trying to say). I speak to people all over the world, and this topic will inevitably come up with most of the people I work with at one point or another. I work in a very large publishing firm on LI. Most people assume that we moved here after the attacks (which we did not) so many of my vendors and clients will bring it up. There are some that are equally as sensitive as many who live here, or who are at least aware of the fact that it might be sensitive to us, but there are some who just are not.

Well said. Another way you could think of it is enjoying life. You could visit and be respectful but I don't think smiling and laughing should be something we frown on...I'm sure the people who died there would want to see that life goes on. You know what I mean?
The first time I took the PATH to WTC and walked up the stairs I was FREAKED out. You literally walk into the hole. I felt like I was walking on a grave.
