I think we will follow up with an allergist, although I don't know how well that will go since it was torture even getting the blood from my son. Regardless it is something that needs to be done. We did have the RAST test done and that was what came back normal. I'm so scared to feed him now, not knowing if the results were "true" or not, and if I should avoid any ingredients.

If it was a food allergy, can these rash/hives take awhile to pop up? Or is it usually immediate?

Oh, and I just looked up the med my son was on, glycolax, and found some more "side effects listed"....

What side effects may I notice from taking polyethylene glycol 3350? (Back to top)
Side effects that you should report to your prescriber or health care professional as soon as possible:
•diarrhea
•difficulty breathing (rare)
•itching of the skin, hives, or skin rash (rare)
•severe bloating, pain, or distension of the stomach
•vomiting

Stop taking polyethylene glycol 3350 and seek emergency medical attention if you experience an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of your throat; swelling of your lips, tongue, or face; or hives) or severe diarrhea..

Seems like it definitely could have been the meds. Ugh! I wish we knew for sure already!

Thanks again ladies!

So, he was being treated for consitpation? Was he on the meds for a while before getting this rash?

I would say, if he did have a fever, not related to teething, it may be just a virus. I would show the Dr the pics and see what they say.

I hope he is feeling better!

Re: Pics of my son's HORRIBLE RASH: ever see this before? Any ideas?

Thanks ladies. We've really been driving ourselves crazy trying to figure out what was "different" the last couple of days. He was on the meds since Friday and Tues the rash appeared. I don't know if it took awhile for the buildup to finally make a reaction come out.

We also wondered about poison ivy..... can you get that without actually touching the plant? We got a motorized jeep for him free from a garage sale, and wondered if it had possibly been near any poison ivy. We should have washed the thing down before letting him play.... we'll never do that again. It's just horrible to question every little thing that we've done, he's eaten, etc, and not know the true answer.

Thanks again for all your well-wishes and help! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Pics of my son's HORRIBLE RASH: ever see this before? Any ideas?

I used top get that all tht eime and they could never tell me what it was!! I went to an allergist and they said 90% of the time they cant tell what hives are from. I had to take steroid pakcs. My husband was taking me to the ER 3 times a week. They knew me by name and I would just walk in for treatment!! I dont get them anymore, but i was that bad. I had swollen eyes and lips and only once did I start wheezing. I took so many steroids I gained 30 lbs!! BUt I lost it before my wedding!!

Both of my neices had Fifth's desease when the summer started and it looked like that but it didnt spread all over their bodies it was mostly on their face and arms. The dr. told my SIL that it is has to run it's course but that they can't get overly excited and they need to stay out of the sun. With in a week it was gone. It didn't bother them at all and they didnt have a fever or sores. I would also get a second opinion or bring him to a dermotoligst

Aww... your poor baby! I am not a mommy but wanted to respond because I have gotten a similar rash from taking amoxicillin. It happened to me about 7 days after I started taking it. I was told to take benedryl and that I would be fine in a few days.

Poison ivy usually starts as little red itchy pimple like bumps that then get bigger and blister like. It usually takes 1-2 weeks for it to go away. You have to come in contact with the oil from the plant to get the rash, but you don't have to actually touch the plant. It can be transferred to you from someone else or even a pet that may have come in contact with it.

Did you possibly change his body soap or clothes soap. I get a similar rash from soaps with fragrance.

Im glad he is getting better - I haven't seen anything like this - i know that hives could look like this - but they are usually is smaller patches around the body.

I would go to different doctors - pharmasits - get some opinions - show them the pics - if wonderful that you took them - show them and perhaps they can help you tooChat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I think allergic reactions to food usually appear pretty quickly. Allergic reactions to medications also usually appear pretty quickly. An adverse reaction to a medication may take up to several days to appear. An adverse reaction is different from an allergy. A "rash" can be an adverse reaction (aka "side effect") and can occur without any itching from it. You can also get itching, without a rash as a side effect from some medications. Hives on the other hand is usually a sign of a true "allergy".

The drug information specifically lists Stop taking polyethylene glycol 3350 and seek emergency medical attention if you experience an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of your throat; swelling of your lips, tongue, or face; or hives)

It is important to distinguish between the two because if an allergy is reported to a medication it limits not only that medication but any medication even related to it. But if it is an adverse reaction to one medication, most often another one that is related can be given without problem.

If it were poison ivy, it would have been very itchy. Also, you can't remove the oil from poison ivy with regular soap and water so if you suspect that an object or clothing has been exposed to it, you need to get something specifically for that from the pharmacy to wash the items with.

It looks like it could be an adverse reaction to the medication. The one way to know for sure would be to give it to him again and see if he has the same reaction WHICH I AM NOT SUGGESTING because I would not want to take that chance, or even to subject that poor baby to that terrible rash again; but that would be the best way to see if that is what it is for sure.

I don't think doctors are too quick to give out epipens to parents because they may be afraid that it would be used if it is not needed. And epinephrine can be harmful, especially if it is not truly necessary (and even if it is necessary) so I think they are not too quick to just hand them out -- especially if your son didn't have any signs of a true allergy with throat closing or difficulty breathing.

Finally, the oral steroids could definately cause him to become cranky and irritable. They can also make him jittery and hyperactive. He shouldn't have to be on them too long though.

I hope some of this helps you. It sounds like you are doing all the right things. I would definately follow up with a dermatologist and an allergist to see if you can get some answers. I hope you do soon, and I hope your little boy gets better really fast! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Pics of my son's HORRIBLE RASH: ever see this before? Any ideas?

I had a similar rash 2 times before, but only on my stomach. I never knew for sure what it was, but pretty much figured it out. We lived in an apt complex and I walk the dogs in the grass. Both times I got this rash they had treated the lawn recently with some chemicals. It took at least a week for it to go away. I don't know how I got it on my belly though? Chat Icon It's the only thing I can come up with. It was too coincidental, you know? Has he been running around in the grass anywhere around the time the rash started? Within a day or two? Just a thought...

Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon - Poor baby. He has to be so umcofortable.

If this were me, I would take him to a dermatologist. I broke out in a similar rash years ago (not on my face though) - No one could figure it out - I went a dermatologist and he did a small biopsy of the rash - turns out I'm was allergic to my BCP.

My lips also swell when I eat certain tomatoes. My daughter breaks out in hives from barley.

It has to be something that is causing this - My guess is it's something he's eating. I remember that drug reaction do not affect the face.

could it be a food reaction, or did you change a detergent?
