Spinoff to kids & age appropriateness

at what age do you think a child should have a cell phone? not one of those emergency only cell phones, but one that has minutes and they can chat with their friends with?

I always see little girls (around 10?) in malls, wearing full face of makeup, chatting on their cell phone, carrying a designer handbag (vuitton, burberry, gucci etc) with no parents in sight... they are such easy target for sickos out there! Chat Icon

Re: Spinoff to kids & age appropriateness

I think about this alot ....my daughter is 9 and in 4th grade and she will only be 10yrs old going into the Middle School. and she wants a cell phone when she goes to middle school for emergency reasons
the add on is like $9.99 a month BUT DH SAYS NO WAY
I am really considering it because they atrent allowed to use the payphone to call home anymore and I am concerned about certain things like (if she gets her period) or if she forgets her instrument etc

I know its TOO YOUNG but for $10 isnt it worth it?

Re: Spinoff to kids & age appropriateness

High school when they can pay for at least half of the bill.

I got my first cell phone with my own credit at 18.

But, with weirdos out there, when my kids start going over to friend's houses, they will have that "keychain cell phone". You can only call 4 numbers on it. I would out the house number, my husbands and my cell phone number, and 911.

Re: Spinoff to kids & age appropriateness

I am going through this with my son now , he just turned 11 and is in the 5th grade, he begs me for a cell phone all the time, a lot of his friends have them I told him no...i know he is not responsible enough to have one and would lose or break it, plus I just think its completely unnecessary at that age

I third it. I also don't like the idea of them being a distraction in school and would never want a teacher to be competing with a cell phone/text messaging for their attention in class.

Re: Spinoff to kids & age appropriateness

I believe there's a new cell phone out that can only dial certain pre-set numbers (like home and 911). I would get something like this for a younger child, but a regular cell, I would wait until they're 15 or 16.

Re: Spinoff to kids & age appropriateness

I think they don't need a cell phone until they are old enough to drive. If they're willing to pay for it, I guess I wouldn't have a problem if they had one at a younger age. I got a cell phone when I was 16 or 17. That way, if I was out with the car, my parents could always reach me just in case. I rarely used it other than to call my parents. I would also want to limit the # of minutes they could use it.

Re: Spinoff to kids & age appropriateness

We are going to get a cell phone for my son in a couple years (he's 5 now) and it'll be one of the ones that only dials the numbers we program in (our house and cell numbers) and it's to be for emergencies only... I remember being a kid and trying to use the payphone and what if he doesn't have change on him or what if god forbid there is a problem... other than that he won't have a cell phone to "chat" with his friends till he can pay for it.

That would be my first instinct, but my cousin got one, when she was old enough to be dropped off at the mall by with friends. ( 13,14?) You can't really count on pay phones anymore.

I agreee with that, but I think if I had kids I might make them leave it with me ( turned off), when they are home. I'd rather have their friends call on the main line, so I knew who was calling & when.

ETA- I didn't know about the phones where you can only call a few preset #s. Those are a good idea for younger kids.

Agreed!

Although I know someone whose son told them he was going to a party but the parents were home. They called him AT THE PARTY and told him to take a picture of the parents & email it.

I agree. I have a step-daughter who is 9, soon to be 10. And if you ask her when she is getting a cell phone, she will tell you the same thing, "when I can pay for it myself". I have instilled that in her already Chat Icon

We were talking about cell phones or something when my mom was around and I asked her when she was getting one and she said "when I can pay for it myself" and my mother got the biggest smile on her face Chat Icon
