Poll: Those who had babies w/in the past year or so

I'm curious because as I look over at the PG board lately I see so many more women having scheduled c-sections and inductions...that I have to ask - do women allow themselves (better yet do their Drs) to go into labor on their own anymore? It just seems like there are more "I'm being induced today/getting a c-section today" posts than there are "holy crap, I think my water just broke!" posts. Of course...it could be that if your water just broke, your first thought probably isn't to post about it Chat Icon

So, in light of that, I'm doing a poll. I'm wondering if there is a trend here.

As for me, I had a scheduled induction. I was 1 week past my due date, but an induction nonetheless.

ETA: For those that have more than one baby, you can vote according to how it went for your youngest child.

Re: Poll: Those who had babies w/in the past year or so

I had early signs of pre-e...my blood pressure had rocketed up to 150/110 and the swelling was out of control...my doc played on the safe side and induced me at 37 weeks, 4 days
Technically not scheduled I guess, because he sent me straight to the hospital from my appointment...
I had a pretty good delivery and it still took me three weeks for my BP to go down with the help of meds, who knows what would have happened if they had waited.

I was scheduled for an induction for 11 days past my due date, but my water broke 2 days before. I still had to get pitocin though. As much as I wanted my baby out towards the end, I wanted to wait as long as possible to give my body a chance to go into labor on its own before being induced. Due dates are just an estimate anyway so even though my DS was born 10 days "late" I don't really consider him to be late.

Re: Poll: Those who had babies w/in the past year or so

I had a scheduled c-section 3 weeks before my due date. I am petite and she was measuring 8 pounds at my 37 week appointment. The doctor gave me 5% chance of being able to deliver her naturaly. I was not happy with those odds so we scheduled the c-section for that Friday. She was 8 pounds at birth and I am very happy with our decision. I would not change a thing.

Not voting but wanted to add that it was an excellent post. I see a lot more inductions these days - for 2005-2006, here are the stats of family/friends not on this board:

3 inductions
2 natural
1 scheduled C

My water broke 11 days early. Wound up having a c-section for failure to progress.

Same thing for me too! I think about that also, what if I waited and didnt call the day I was sooooo swollen. ThankGod for my mom she called for me cause she was worried. My DH was away, but did make it for the birth.

I had none of the above. I went in for my weekly dr's appt and I was 100% effaced (but had been for a few weeks) and had gone to 4 cm dialated. She sent me home to get my bag and to the hospital. They were going to induce me if need be but they broke my water and instantly was in full blown labor.

Wow! Crazy story to tell the grandkids...I guess I had some idea because my pressure started to rise at 35 weeks...but I was totally shocked and unprepared to give birth that day...I remember looking at my DH in a daze as we headed to the hospital...I was still working!!!

I voted for went into labor on my own. My water had ruptured (just a small leak) the doctor sent me to the hospital but labor did not start on its own after he fully broke my water. So he decided to induce me in the morning.

YIKES! You had it much worse than I did...Do you mean magnesium? I didn't get it, they had it hanging from my pole just in case, but were able to keep me bedridden and my BP was "borderline too high" the whole time I was in labor. But because I didn't have it, I did spike a fever when pushing and Bella went straight to the NICU after she was born and had a little IV in her hand for antibiotics against sepsis the whole time I was in and I actually got discharged like 8 hours before the doc was able to comfortable send her home Chat Icon Chat Icon I am actually shocked I didn't freak out more...but I think it was too surreal for me at the time.

We did get two little munchkins outta the deal though!

I was 11 days late and was MORE THAN ready to have this baby.

One thing I think is important to tell people is that an induction can take a few days. I was induced on Saturday morning (like 10 am) and Noah wasn't born until 9 pm on the Monday night and let me tell you...I had a VERY uncomfortable 3 days! My husband took pictures of me and I look very cross indeed!!!

Next time I would wait to go into labor naturally....

Edited to say...It does seem like C-Sections are given out like Candy in the States, I don't personally know anyone here in the UK that has had a C-Section. The NHS are really into Natural births here. Not to say that ladies don't have them, but not as many in the states

I went into labor naturally, at 8 days late, and she was estimated to be 9-10 pounds, but my doctor did not want to induce until 2 weeks late. I did wind up with a c/s becuase she was not desending at the correct angle, and I wasnt progressing

Yes, it was magnesium--LOL Knew it was something like that. Julia was in NICU to for a week, and I couldnt stand to see that IV in her little hand Chat Icon I also tested + for strep B so she had to get on antibiotics for that to. I'm shocked as to how calm I was in the hosptial, I was just more worried about Julia instead of myself. I'm so worried about the next baby, I will live on water and boiled chicken Chat Icon NO SALT!! Chat Icon

I was *just* having this conversation with a pregnant friend at work today! She said that I'm the only person she knows in the past year that actually went into labor. She's really looking forward to that ,"OMG I think it's time" moment. Meanwhile, her doctor is already warning her he *may* want to induce since he estimates the baby to be at 3 lbs + already (she's 27 weeks).

I know when I went for my 40 week visit, the doctor said they would likely call me for an induction that weekend and I wouldn't have even been a week late! I was 2 days late, which is nothing, and I'm glad it worked out the way it did (except for the c/s). I hope to go into labor the next time as well, even if I need another c/s...if that's even a possibility.

I went into labor on my own 5 days past my due date but I used midwives who do not do inductions until 42 weeks unless there is just cause to do so.

I have noticed this as well. I gave birth in Ireland and they have a much lower c-section rate. I think here in the States part of the reason is malpractice suits.

Anyway, I went into labor naturally and the Dr broke my water in the hospital. I wasn't progressing so I got a drug to help me along, which in turn made DS heart rate go haywire. So they stopped the drugs and did a test on him and let me wait it out a few hours to see if I would progress naturally. I did and had a natural childbirth. Given the problems I experience during labor and the lack of progression and effect of the drugs on DS, I firmly believe that if I was here in the US, Alex would have been born via c-section.

Re: Poll: Those who had babies w/in the past year or so

For my first, albeit 2 years ago, I was in my 37th week and my water broke. I had a c/s because he was breech and I never went into labor.

I am now trying to VBAC and waiting to go into labor on my own. If the baby is not here by my due date, I will be scheduling a repeat c/s because I can't be induced because of the prior c/s, and my doc doesn't want me to VBAC if they baby looks to be more than 8lbs. (which it most likely will be if I am overdue).

I just wanted to add that if I decided from the beginning to once a c/s, always a c/s, my doc owuld never schedule me before 39 weeks no matter how big he thought the baby was. That is just his policy.

BTW, I did not vote because I couldn't find a category I fit into. I just wanted to share my experiences.

I voted though my son is over 2, I hope you don't mind!

I did go into labor naturally the night before my scheduled c-section unfortunately. I had one because my son was too big for me to have vaginally.
