Re: Port Jeff (Or station) Shirley/Mastic?

Port Jeff is nice...just check where the houses are, near 112 and 347 is kind of nasty, we looked at a few over there.

Shirley and Mastic are okay. The school district is supposedly not the best and they are wayyyy out there. You would be east of the Willie Floyd which, I believe is Exit 71 on the LIE.

Port Jefferson is a different from Port Jeff Station. Of the two, Port Jeff is pricier/nicer, but Port Jeff Station has some cute areas.

Mastic & Shirley are about equal, and not terribly desirable. Houses are cheap though...

William Floyd runs straight through Shirley and Mastic is the neighboring town to the east....

My DH are constantly having this constant "discussion" About Shirley/Mastic.

My feeling is If I buy a house I buy it for a long time or forever. I want a good school district for when we eventually have kids. His feeling is we don't have kids yet so who cares. Chat Icon

My grandmother has always lived in the PJ area. She lives in PJS right now and it's great.

I agree with what the others say about Shirley/Mastic. I believe it's William Floyd SD and it's pretty rough.

You should also check out Medford and Patchogue in the Pat Med School District. You can find some affordable houses in these areas still.

I have heard HORRIBLE things about Mastic. A friend is putting an extention on her house to get her mom out of Mastic because their house has been broken into on more than on occasion!

i agree....I do not like Mastic or Shirley! Chat Icon

I grew up in PJS and my father lived in PJ. Both are great areas but PJ can be very pricy depending on where it is.

I have not heard great things about Shirly/Mastic, but who knows, if a lot of young families starting out move there (because it is very affordable) it will change eventually.

I have heard so many people say the same as your Dh-"we don't have kids yet so..." My biggest thing and its JMO is that you have to think about reselling the home if you plan on moving before your kids are in the district. My husband never plans on staying in our home that long, but at least we know when we want to sell our district will be desireable and we'll have a wider range of buyers.

Quite honestly - I think it has gotten alot better. I have 4 neices and nephews in the William Floyd school district and they love it. They all do VERY well in school.
As far as the area goes there are good and bad, but it is getting better. Yes - there are a couple of blocks that I would not choose to live on, but you just stay away from them.

I live in PJS too and LOVE the area I live in...but PJS has its "areas" just like ANY other town.

Mastic/Shirley is suppose to be a booming area but I have not heard the best of things. But I also think it depends on the immediate "area".

ETA: People told me PJS didnt used to be the way it was years ago and that it was a booming town and now it is what it is. I think Mastic/Shirley will one day turn into that.

I have lived in PJS since 1983 and IMO it hasn't changed much, just maybe some bigger shopping centers and new house developments.

Re: Port Jeff (Or station) Shirley/Mastic?

William Floyd is one of the worst districts on Long Island. A lot of Mastic is very ghetto IMO.

Shirley isn't too bad... but again Shirley and Mastic share the same school district.

There are parts of Shirley that sit in a different school district though (maybe Shoreham or Longwood - forget)... and those houses are more money.

I thought Shirley went to either WF or Longwood...NOT Shoreham SD!

And yes the house are nicer but that is because the power plant was there! NO?

Re: Port Jeff (Or station) Shirley/Mastic?

My aunt lives in Port Jeff Station, its very nice..high taxes, but nice...
Mastic can be very scary. I have about 5-6 friends that live there...I like it, the houses are cheap but yes the area is NOT the greatest at ALL...Shirley is better then Mastic by far. A lot of Shirley is big MONEY! Close to Smiths Point beach , On William Floyd ...those houses start at $500,00 -$600,000 and go way up.

I also dont think its Shoreham school district.
My Cousin lives on wading river border, and goes to Shoreham...thats kinda far from Shirley....Their school district though is AMAZING....the taxes are insane...But the class size is like 13-15 kids , they have had computers in theat sch0ol district in each room for like 20 years, now almost each DESK and student has access to their own computer..

One of the jr. highs is CARPETED...or was anyway about 10 yrs ago....

I would say William Floyd SD is so so..All my friends graduated from there...some are doing so so , two went to Penn State so Thats debatable.

The problem with Mastic beach is the reservations...they get crazy....parties and a lot of druunks walking around in my opinion....but I hung out there for years , walking around at night, driving around and I loved it. We always went to the docks, the beach, the bars etc and never experienced anything bad. 3 of my friends own homes there now and they are on nice blocks and I like them a lot...

Some areas of Mastic border Center Moriches....Which also is an AMAZING school district. Graduating class is usually like 50-85 kids....There are some houses in Mastic that are in Center Moriches school district. The taxes towards there are higher though as well.

Not sure... but I do know that most of Shirley goes to WF. But a part of it (northern Shirley) goes to a different... MUCH BETTER school district.

I have to ask Vanessa which one it is to know for sure. She is from Riverhead so she is pretty well versed with the area.

The town of shirley is actually a very thin town if you look at the map. East to west it doesn't extend very far. Maybe a half mile to a mile in width tops.

But it goes pretty far north to south (miles).... from the LIE all the way down to the beach.

Just talked to Tim, he is from Ridge and is also well versed in the areas.

Shirley goes to either Longwood or WF (both NOT good schools IMO)
Wading River and Shoreham and he believes even some parts of Ridge (but not 100% positive) go to Shoreham SD.

And yea i know where Shirley is as well as Mastic Beach..I couldn't live there.

Re: Port Jeff (Or station) Shirley/Mastic?

I grew up in the pt.jeff area..and I love it... Like every town it has it not so good areas..but it def. is alot better than shirley/mastic area..

I have heard nothing but bad things about these 2 towns...and recently a friend of mine bought a house there..

Her house is gorgeous...but totally out of place on her block... and just running up to the pizza place was scaryChat Icon

Im sure some areas are better than others, however Pt jeff ranks much much better on the charts!
