We own our co-op but we're in the process of selling it and buying a house.

Ugh. I'm so stressed. We are having a baby and do not own a home yet, and I am feeling like we are horrible, irresponsible people for it. I was raised with the belief that owning a home before having a baby is a MUST. I mean, we have a roof over our heads and can afford to rent a bigger place, but we just cannot afford to buy anything right now. We're not in the boat of thinking we will NEVER be able to buy anything, but I just feel so unprepared to have a baby ONLY because we don't own a house or condo. I hate living in limbo. I never truly get comfortable because I always know we have to pick up and move soon, anyway. I'm just feeling really sad over this today.Chat Icon

It may not seem like it, but there are many people who have been, are and will be in your shoes. It does not make you irresponsible. Your child will be just as happy and fortunate living in a happy home with two amazing parents that can do their best for her. It's really not about whether it's a house or an apartment-it's about the "home" that is provided. I lived with my parents in a 2 bedroom apartment for 7 years of my life until my paents could finally afford a house. We then moved into a new house out here right before I went into HS, but had to live in an apartment for about 6 months.

I have the most amazing parents in the world and they have always provided a "home" no matter where we were living . . . .

We own a one-bedroom condo. I do want to buy something larger before we start TTC, but only because I feel like our financial situation will be much worse after we have a baby. Daycare at my job is $20,000 per year, so that really depletes much of what we'd be able to save.

We bought the house about a year and a half after we got married. We started looking a year after, but didn't find our house for about six months.

Rachel...
Owning a home does not make for a happy child. My mom didn't buy her house until I was 25 years old (not living at home) and we were always renting apartments and did a good amount of moving. I have nothing but good memories and never thought about the fact that we didn't own our home.

Do you own your own house or condo?

ETA: or co-op, or whatever you currently live in. Just do you own it or not.

Well said Bri...

Rachel...i was like you, freaking out about having a house before child...But I think that Bri said it best...

The MOST important thing for a child is two wonderful, loving parents...

The house will come

I may be the minority, but I just dont understand how having a house is a big deal versus renting, when having children. Its how you riase your children, not where you raise them that matters...But I do think my views are based on how I grew up.

I agree.

I agree too and we rent as well.

Re: I'm just curious, for those who are already married..POLL

I guess I am just having an adjustment period with the baby on the way. I know we'll own a house someday, so I don't know why I'm allowing other people to make me feel badly for not owning one before I have a baby. Honestly, I'm not willing to rush into buying a house JUST because I'm pregnant. Buying something is a HUGE decision, and I want to take my time with that. Plus, we had already planned to wait until the end of next year to buy something, so I don't see why our plans need to be changed.
I think all of my insecurities are just coming from other people's negative comments. Mostly my family. Sometimes it really s-cks caring so much what your family thinksChat Icon

well i think that you shouldn't listen too much to what others are saying. You are happy, JT is happy...this is what counts

having the house is an ideal that most people want. That older people think should happen...

it isn't a rule by any means...

AND for all the reasons you just mentioned...are good reasons for not rushing into home ownership....

It will happen when it is right for YOUChat Icon

We got very lucky and bought our house from my parents when they moved. We didn't get a "deal" for the house for what the prices were going for at that time but we did put down alot so that helped.

Same here, but we bought from ILs. It was 2 years ago, so prices were less than they are now. We wouldn't be able to do it now I don't think.

I owned a co-op I sold a year ago so we could buy our house 9 months ago - 5 months before our wedding. If I had not bought that co-op we would never have been able to buy our house.

Don't feel pressured. You'll definitely manage perfectly. Sometimes I think we rushed into buying a house because of the crazy increasing prices. My friend and her husband rented an apartment until their baby was 18 months and now they have a gorgeous house. You'll be just as lucky.Chat Icon

we rent now, but hopefully we will be buying when our lease is up, I know we wont be staying in NY unless the prices drop in a major way, if not probably NC.
