There's definitely no one answer here. It's whatever works best for *your* family. I'm a SAHM now, but I'm starting to get the itch to work again - only P/T until they're in school, but I feel like I have to work - for my sanity. Chat Icon

Re: stay at home or work

I am a SAHM. I know SAHM'S, Moms who work from home, and moms who work outside of the home.

I honestly do not think there is a "best method"
I think every family and what will work for them is different. There is no wrong or right when it comes to this. There is pros and cons to all of them just like everything else.

Its really a personal decision that you and your DH need to discuss.

Re: stay at home or work

I'm a SAHM to a 4 year old and a 1 year old. I'd probably get more rest if I went back to work (and I was a 2nd grade teacher). But I do love being home with my boys so this is where I'll stay.

I work PT 2 nights a week from 2-10pm and it's perfect. I miss very little time with DD and it gets me out of the house for adult interaction.

Re: stay at home or work

I am a SAHM and I work from home and let me tell you its not easy...but the upside is I get to see my DD every day...

I make sacrifices where on days I cannot get anything done for work I end up working late into the night while she is sleeping....leaves little time for DH but it is what it is for now.

If we have a second child and can afford it I will be a full time SAHM..

Funny before I got pregnant I was adamant I would be going back to work and thought I would go nuts at home all day with the baby but now she is here I couldnt imagine leaving her.

I go to work everyday.

The answer is none of the above. You will feel guilty no matter what you choose.

Re: stay at home or work

Before I had my baby I always said I would be a stay at home mom and that we would make it work no matter what, but after being home for 6 months (and I will be home for another 6 months) I realize how much better I feel when I am part of something constructive. Being at home with the baby is great, but I need to get out and deal with people, it makes me feel good.

Putting my baby into daycare is something I never ever thought I would want to do, however now that it is all actually happening to me, I think he will thrive in that kind of environment.

Also (this is quite controversial) after having no income now, I personally think that I feel like I will lose all power in this relationship if I have no money of my own coming in. Thats just how I feel...

I am a SAHM. I think it is really hard. Especially, today when Alex was sick and cranky all day, wouldn't nap and now I hope he is in bed for the night and doesn't wake at 5am since it is only 6pm. But 90% of the time I love staying home. I think everyone has to do what is right for their family. Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: stay at home or work

Both DH and I work full time. My job is flexible but then again I'm on call 24/7 so I'm never really "off"

I think the ideal situation for me would be to work maybe three days a week just for my sanity.

Re: stay at home or work

I work from home as a freelancer, but now that my son is a toddler it is very hard. I actually send him to daycare 2 days a week so that I can go meet with a client or work a full day without interruptions. Lately I am working late at night. But I don't think I could ever go back to work in an office full time again!

Re: stay at home or work

i was home with my daughter for her first year but due to money being so tight, I went back to work full time.
now I work part time so that gives me money but also time to be with her.

I think you have to decide what's best for your family.

I go into the office 3 days a week (work from home the other 2) - I work in downtown NYC - It gets rough sometimes (I have a 2 hour commute each way) - so I'm looking to start my own business from home.

ETA: I like working - I'm so independant, and the interaction wuth other adults keeps me sane.

Re: stay at home or work

I work full-time but my hours are pretty good, for now, that is. There's no "right" answer - you have to find what works for you - some women and babies thrive in a SAHM situation. For myself, I need the adult interaction, intellectual stimulation and challenge and I need to have my own pursuits to thrive as a mommy. And, my daughter does much better in the daycare environment - she thrives with all of the attention, interaction, activities and babies amongst her. When I stay at home with her, she's cranky and fussy all day, out of boredom. But, again, every family, every child, every mother is different and what's "ideal" is what works for each family and each person. For some that means SAHM, for some working part-time, and for some, working full-time.

Re: stay at home or work

I go in the office 3 days a week and work from home 2 days. I agree with the others, with a toddler, it's tough to get the work done. Fortunately, on my days home, my in-laws or husband take my 2 year old for the day and that helps - this way I only have the 4 month old to worry about. She's easy.

Re: stay at home or work

I work PT outside the home and I HATE it. I don't mind the working or the interaction, but I bring the baby with me which is both a plus and minus. A plus because I don't pay for daycare; a minus because I feel like I don't get much done and I hardly get a break from her to do my own thing.

I'd love to work at home and I don't even know where to start to do so.....

if anyone has advice on how or what they do that would be great.
