TEACHERS - can someone explain a basal program to me?
I teach math, so this is not a term I see all that often, but for an inservice class I am comparing a basal program to a reform-oriented (which I use). I can't find a good, basic definition of "basal" anywhere.
Thanks!!

Re: TEACHERS - can someone explain a basal program to me?
A basal reader is a textbook with stories that have a limited vocabulary. The language is repetetive (remember "see D*ck run, run D*ck run"?) With each successive story, new vocabulary is added. It is meant to teach kids to read by repetition.
If you need more info, FM me or you can try and google "basal reader"
Good luck with your paper!

thanks ladies!!
Are basals considered beneficial? I know in math, the curriculum is turning towards more of a constructivist approach, so I am not sure if basal-type learning is still "in"?

No, most districts are coming or have already come away from basals. Balanced literacy is the more current approach. basals aren't really leveled for the different reading abilities in a classroom

Re: TEACHERS - can someone explain a basal program to me?
Basals are also a very controlling method of teaching. The accompanying guide gives the teacher the language to use during the lesson to the point of stating, "Ask the students to point at the striped cat. Then ask the students - "What is so different about that cat?""
The newer basals are much more student-friendly than the old ones but the language is still contrived and is not based on authentic texts.
