All cheeses are not ok....soft cheese like Brie, are not safe for pregnant women to eat...since I don't eat anything but American I don't worry...LOL

Re: Can a PG lady eat blue cheese or blue cheese dressing?

This is wierd... I know he isnt very strict, and alot more modern...but he was very clear on this...and I didnt ask... because I never thought about it...

He said if I bought a block of cheese and kept it unwrapped...and let it go bad... it would not be good...

so I dont know if since blue cheese is a more aged cheese it would fall into this category...???

Most doctors will tell you to stay away from unpasteurized cheeses. I don't know if blue cheese is one of them. I thought it was mostly or only imported cheeses because they don't have to go through the same pasteurization processes that they do here.

That said, I ate a California Cobb salad the other day.

Re: Can a PG lady eat blue cheese or blue cheese dressing?

It's true that pregnant women shouldn't eat unpasteurized cheeses, but US standards for cheeses and all dairy products are extremely strict, so pretty much everything you buy in the stores, as long as it's not imported cheese, will met US pasteurization requirements. Just be wary of any imported cheeses....

"Attacks" the fetus?? That's a bit much, I think.
Let's be real here. The risk is of getting Listeria infection which is extremely rare. You have better chance of getting hit by a car or getting into a serious car accident while pg than you do of getting listeriosis and both of those would do alot more damage to the fetus.

From babycenter.com:

Answer: Unpasteurized soft cheeses (and other unpasteurized dairy products) can carry a potentially deadly bacteria called listeria monocytogenes. Although cases of listeria infection are rare (the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate that 2,500 people in the U.S. become ill every year), pregnant women are about 20 times more likely than other healthy adults to get listeriosis.

In healthy adults, infection with listeria can cause a short-lived flulike illness. Pregnant women, however, can be hit harder by listeria infection, for the same reason they're more susceptible to everything during pregnancy: Their immune system isn't working as well.

Scientists now believe there may be a link between listeria infection and miscarriages and stillbirths. Babies born to mothers infected during pregnancy can have trouble breathing, low body temperature, and other problems. Some who seem healthy at birth can have symptoms weeks later, such as feeding problems and fever. And recent research suggests that listeria infection is the third most common cause of septicemia (blood poisoning) and meningitis in newborns. The organism can also be dangerous to small children, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems.

Symptoms usually develop several weeks after exposure to the bacteria. They sometimes, but not always, include fever, chills, muscle aches, and back pain. The incubation period before the illness develops can be as long as ten weeks, which can make it hard to pinpoint exactly which food made you sick. Doctors diagnose a fever or flulike illness as listeria infection by swabbing a sample from your vagina and cervix and checking your blood. Antibiotics will treat the infection. Newborns can also be tested and treated.

Cheeses made in the United States must be made from pasteurized milk (pasteurization kills the listeria organism), so those are fairly safe. Imported soft cheeses are another story. These may include Brie, Camembert, feta, goat, Limburger, Montrachet, Neufchatel, queso fresco, and Pont-Leveque. Listeria can also be found in unpasteurized semi-soft cheeses (slightly more solid cheeses that do not grate easily and are often coated with wax to preserve moisture and extend shelf life). Semi-soft cheeses include Asiago, Belle Paese, bleu, brick, Gorgonzola, Havarti, Muenster, Port-Salut, Roquefort, and Taleggio. Listeria is not found in hard cheeses such as Cheddar, or in processed cheeses such as cottage cheese, or in yogurt.

* Editor's Note: Imported cheeses made from raw (unpasteurized) milk must be aged for 60 days, a process that should eliminate any potentially dangerous bacteria. Nevertheless, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the Food and Drug Administration both advise pregnant women against eating unpasteurized soft and semi-soft cheeses.

My Dr. said no ages cheeses, which I can't have anyway (and don't even like) b/c they triggger migraines.

The chances of gettig Listeria seem to be slim, but my motto is:

When in doubt...Don't.

Re: Can a PG lady eat blue cheese or blue cheese dressing?

My Dr said this was a "myth" as well..

Like the coffee/caffenine thing...Studies are everywhere that for caffeine to affect the fetus you have to drink the equivalent of 5 2 liter bottles of soda or 8 cups of cofee a DAY for days and days on end to have an affect..

Its the same with the cheese...If you eat ten blocks of it, you may be affected....

If you dont feel comfortable taking a chnace dont, but also do not freak out until you know the facts and truths...

I'm sorry if that came off as if I was being rude to YOU, I didn't mean it that way!

I'm just trying to say that we should know WHY we are told to avoid certain foods and "attacking the fetus" isn't really the reason why.

There are so many things out there that "could" pose a threat and sometimes pregnant women get out of control with all the "don'ts and can'ts" without even knowing why. I'm all for being informed and making informed decisions about your health, that's all.

And I definitely think that everyone should go by what their doctors tell them and drs will differ in what they do and don't allow during pregnancy.

I hope not to make anyone uncomfortable, but I just wanted to let you know that my friend's sister gave birth to a baby that only lived for 2 weeks, and the mother had very severe infection issues.

They attributed the baby's death and the mother's bad illness to listeria. She had eaten cold cuts and hot dogs during her pregnancy.

What the actual probability of this happening is, I dont know (probably very slim) but I just wanted to share since it was so close to me and everyone was discussing it.

So... will you stop driving to work then? Because you *could* potentially (God forbid) have something happen to you and your baby on the way to work... higher chances of that happening than of getting Listeria.

It's not the best analogy because yes, you need take the risk of driving to work because you need to make a living but you don't *need* to eat feta cheese. Chat Icon But you get the idea...

I just think that it's easy to get out of control with all the don'ts of pregnancy without enough hard evidence to back it up. So my motto is, when in doubt, ask your Dr. Chat Icon

This is exactly why it bothers me when people say "oh no - you shouldn't eat that!" without knowing why! Because then it scares every poor pg woman into thinking her baby is going to be born with 3 heads because she ate a piece of cheese!!

Yes, some Drs will tell you to avoid hot dogs and other similarly processed meats (cold cuts, etc) because of a similar risk of Listeria.

Like we don't worry enough as it is while we are pg!!

If you are concerned, then I would certainly discuss this with your doctor. As you know, there is a test they can do and maybe that would put your mind at ease. But I really think that you and your baby will be just fine even if you ate 2 hot dogs!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon
