I got into a car accident today.
I was driving on Main St. in Smithtown, in the right lane and some guy cut over from the left lane and hit me. Luckily, he hit the front of my car and not my door, but I hurt my neck really bad
And to make matters worse, he offered me $1000 to NOT call the police...to which I responded, " You offering me that money to NOT call the police is all the more reason I AM calling the police!" And then began the begging and pleading to not call the police. I just rolled up my window and dialed. 
It turned out that he had a stolen lisense plate on the car and no registration. He was lying left and right to the cop and the cops ended up impouding his car. His mommy came down to rescue him (HELLO! He was 28!), and she offered to pay for whatever the damages are, as long as I don't call the insurance company. So something's fishy about the situation. I dont' know what it is, but I don't even want to know.
Anyway, just needed to vent my upsetting situation.

My mom was in a car accident with an idiot yesterday. He hit her and then began cursing her out!!

That entire situation sounds SO SHADY though, I mean what CRAP begging you NOT to call the cops BS on THAT
And I WOULD DEF. call the insurance co!!

I'm going to get an estimate tomorrow and give them exactly 24 hours to give me cash. If I don't get it, then I am going to the insurance. This is what the cop suggested, too, as his insurance company might not pay for it, since the car was unregistered. I am pretty sure they will pay it. They were BEGGING us to not call the insurance.

I would get a nice, high estimate! Try Schubert's in Smithtown, right where you were.
Do you drive a silver car? or was the other guy's car silver?

Rachel!! I hope you're feeling better!!! Neck pain is awful!!! The situation DEFINITELY sounds shady!!! If you are going to accept $$$ from them, I would take a bank check.
The only major problem I see if you don't contact insurance is what if you need to see a doctor or physical therapist? It should be coming from insurance.

We both had white cars.
As for the insurance, I will most likely go through it. I am not comfortable not getting them involved. If they didnt' seem so shady, I wouldn't care, but they were REALLY shady. The cop was SCREAMING at them when we left.

OMG!!! Are you OK??? True what an above poster said about if you need to see a DR. and don't contact their insurance.

When I saw the cops/accident, it was kinda dark...and it was at the shopping center BEFORE Daffy's, heading west.
I'm sooooo sorry if that was you! I totally would've stopped and stayed with you!!!!

Yikes! I'm glad it's only your neck that got hurt. Luckily your peanut is floating around in a sack full of fluid.
Keep in mind that the damage to the car is in no way going to cover your medical.
Also there is nothing to prevent you from taking a check & submitting it to your insurance if the check doesn't cash.
This whole thing sounds very illegal.

That's awful, please go through insurance. I had a prior experience where the guy had no insurance and never paid me for the damages on my car. The whole thing sounds way to shady to mess around with.

I would DEF get your neck checked out asap.
i got in an accident YEARS ago (2000) and never got anythign checked out and now i have back problems.
Thank god for the most part you are ok though.
i would do what you are doing. give them the estimate (or get a bunch and tell them the highest one, but get the lowest one!) and have them have 24 hours to give you the money or call.
I once rearended a guy and since i was a new driver i asked if i could pay cash and him not call the insurance which is what we did.
And, are you preggers? or do you have a baby? i didnt even know this.
