Re: I'm just curious, for those who are already married..POLL

We own our house.... We were actually in the same situation you are in when we decided to buy. Got married in July, found out I was pg in Sept and started house hunting seriously in Dec. We closed on our house on Valentine's Day last year.

It really worked out for us bc our mortgage note is $500 less than what we were paying in rent. We also lucked out be we found a house that had been completely rehabbed. I don't think this would have been possible if we lived in NY.

There is nothing wrong with not owning when you have a child. We lived in an apt until I was 12 years old. I didn't feel slighted or think my parents were bad bc they didn't buy a house. Take your time and find a house when you are ready. Everything will workout. Chat Icon Chat Icon

Yes we bought our house before we got married. We did things backwards but thankful b/c the prices are so sky high now I know for sure there is no way we could have afforded it now- especially after our wedding!

We rent too. We're saving for a house, and we'll probably rent for at least another year.

Try not to stress about it. Plenty of people rent and have children. When you have enough $$, you will buy a home. For now, you have a roof over your head and you can provide for your child. You are NOT irresponsible. Chat Icon

Ditto!

But...I owned a condo myself before I even met DH. He moved in with me...and after we got married, we sold it and bought our house.

We bought our house a few months before we got married. I rented for years and there is nothing wrong with it at all. As long as you are happy with where you are living and there is plenty of space for you and your baby then don't worry about it! Everything comes in time!!!

Re: I'm just curious, for those who are already married..POLL

We rent, and probably will for at least another 5 years or so...and my parents have never owned a house, we lived with family when I was younger and then rented, so I dont know what its like to even live in an owned house and I dont think that makes me any less of a person, and I dont feel deprived in the least.

If we had to move, which was not often, my Mom never made it my business, took care of it and it was an easy transition. Because of that we see nothing wrong with renting and having kids.

We would LOVE to own, but we arent ready. Financially we might be able to do it, but we just dont want all the what if's that finacially might make it impossible.

I may be the minority, but I just dont understand how having a house is a big deal versus renting, when having children. Its how you raise your children, not where you raise them that matters...But I do think my views are based on how I grew up.

We got very lucky and bought our house from my parents when they moved. We didn't get a "deal" for the house for what the prices were going for at that time but we did put down alot so that helped.

We rent.

We will probably not be able to buy anything for another 5-6 years, if we are lucky. I feel kind of embarassed about that, but I try to keep in mind that we are on the young side, DH is 25 and I am 24; and there is plenty of time for it. Chat Icon

DH owned a house (he bought it with his first wife back in 1998) when we met. We just bought our first house together and I own 1/2 of my father's house.

Granted we are older at 37 and 35.

Re: I'm just curious, for those who are already married..POLL

Thank you for all of the responses. I do feel the need to point out that how I feel about not having a house or condo or coop that I own, is solelya personal thing for ME. I know people raise children in rented houses and apartments and never own something of their own and that it does not rob their children of anything. I know there is absolutely nothing wrong with renting forever. HOWEVER, not for me. I am not ok with that for MYSELF. I just need to make that clear. I am afraid some people have taken what I said the wrong way. There is absolutely NOTHING WRONG with renting FOREVER if you are happy with that. How I feel probably has something to do with all the family members that keep saying things like, "How can you have a baby in an apartment?" and "You're throwing your money away renting!"
I felt fine about our decision to rent for another year until everyone else felt it was their duty in life to point out that I am somehow not doing right by my future child.
Again, I will repeat, I am not judging anyone. I was just curious as to how many people own their own home, and I vented how I was feeling in my own, personal life.

I hate living in limbo. I never truly get comfortable because I always know we have to pick up and move soon, anyway.

That's how I feel about renting, but owning a home doesn't mean you won't pick up & move either. Due to my uncle's job, my cousin has moved 5 times in 14 years. ETA - (Conversly, I have a friend in her mid 20s, who lives with her mom in the same apartment her mother startied renting before she was PG.)

I also feel like we need to own before we have children, but there really isn't a need to.

It's not like you weren't palnning for your future, you just has a little surprise, so you have to re-adjust the plan a little. Just keep sight of your goals & you will get there when the time is right. Chat Icon.

I agree.

We rent too and we really aren't young either- I'm 30 and DH is 35. We rent because we don't want want to settle- at this point we'd have to buy in a location way too far away from the city (I commute and I'm not interested in an hour + commute) and on top of it, we are in NJ and i'm not 100% that we are even going to stay here.

I also wasn't raised in a house, but an apartment- so I don't see what the big deal is- it's about the love in the house, not the size our who owns it.

As I always said- home ownership means nothing about financial stability- I know plenty of people that own homes and are on the brink of disaster- stretched thing to purchase their home- we couldn't live that way. My mom didn't buy a home until she was 40- and b/c she bought within her means and saved her money, taking her time with home repairs, she paid off her mortgage in 10 years- i hope to follow her example.
