Re: Dog Spinoff: People who bring their dogs into the store

I had no idea people brought big dogs into stores (not that I live in NY anymore, but anyway....).
I would NEVER think to bring Bama in a store with me, except for stores that allow dogs, like Home Depot. Still, no need to bring your big dog with you in the store. I don't get it....Chat Icon

edited to say- plenty of people allow their kids to "handle" products- ruin them, etc and put them back... kids carry way more germs than dogs. Yet, we don't make kids stay outside.

The difference is... a lot of people are very allergic to dogs.

I haven't met a person yet that was allergic to Caiden, Jared, Kiera, Samantha, or any other infant or toddler out there.

and people are allergic to peanuts- and they dont stop selling those in stores.

I am hard pressed to believe that someone who is allergic to dogs would have a reaction from being exposed to a dog in a large environment like a CVS or Duane Reade.

They allow small dogs (and cats) to fly in-cabin on a plane- which is WAY tighter quarters. So how a drug store or any other store is worse is beyond me.

Since you haven't seen it happen, I can understand why you wouldn't understand, I used to think he was exaggerating. But on more than one occasion my husband has had to leave a store and take medication to get his breathing under control from being exposed to a dog in a store, where they were unexpected. We purposely avoid people's homes who have dogs and other places where they'd be expected.

And my husband had to be rushed to the hosptial after the last flight we were on someone refused to keep their dog in the carrier under the seat, which would have reduced the amount of dander floating around the cabin.

It seems to me that your husband has terrible allergies- I agree that rules should be followed.
when I fly with my dogs, I do not let them out from under the seat, etc.

You haven't lived with someone that suffers from astma. (sp?)

If they are exposed... they could have serious trouble breathing and have an attack. What if they forgot their inhaler at home because they just wanted to run downstairs to the drugstore quickly to get some soda?

It is an issue. While there are morals and such (how people should respect dog owners... bla bla bla). But in the end... people should just obey the law. The laws are there for a reason.

Like I said... I have seen people "sneak" their dogs into stores because they were small. Thats one thing.

But if the dog is big enough to sniff my crack and my nuts.... its too big for the store. Chat Icon

Chat Icon I think it is so gross and unsanitary. Dogs do not belong in stores.

people like this are IMO very rude and inconsiderate. there is NO reason (unless it is a seeing eye dog) that animals should be allowed in stores. owners should be more more courteous and sensivtive to those around them.

Re: Dog Spinoff: People who bring their dogs into the store

a lot of stores do not have rules against dogs in stores.
B&N for example offers dog biscuits at their shops in NYC.
The Container Store in NYC also allows dogs as does Old Navy.
It seems to me they are minding the rules.

I don't know, some people's children make me twitch after a whileChat Icon . But seriously, I feel a common courtesy should be made by parents of dogs and kids... as much as I don't want some strange dog licking me in a store, I don't want some kids filthy hands (from candy, dirt, runny nose... whatever) running up and touching me either while their parents are paying no mind to them.

I don't know- i would hope that people would wash their clothes before wearing- isn't that what most people do?

I just think the cases where this would happen are so statistically insignificant that the stores do not think about it.

Actually most people will try the clothes on before wearing them. They usually don't wash the clothes at this point.

I dont even think the focus should be on allergies in re: to dogs going into stores. I agree with the other posters ...they just dont belong there. Its unsanitary. You just cant compare a childs germs to an animal. Sorry its gross!!!

I have two things to say here

No. 1 - If the store says NO DOGS then you shouldn't bring your dog in. If the store "encourages" dogs, why wouldn't you bring your dog in?

No. 2 - Why is a little dog okay, but a big dog (that is trained) not? My dog does not produce dander, so people are not allergic, and she weighs 60 lbs. This, as opposed to a shihtzu or yorkie which produces a lot of dander and someone who is allergic would react. I don't understand why it's okay to bring a little dog (which, BTW, have been known to go to the bathroom indoors) and big dogs are a no-no.

ETA: I don't bring Misty anywhere but Petco or Petsmart and the drive thru at Starbucks (where they have asked me to bring her in so they could see her and I didn't)

I never said it was "okay". I said I would "tolerate" it.

Re: Dog Spinoff: People who bring their dogs into the store

Personally big OR small, if a dog is allowed in a store I'd bring him like Petco, Petsmart, certain coffeshops(they usually have a sign that says pet friendly so anyone allergic would know that they're in the store).

If a dog's not allowed,big or small, (I have a small dog) then I won't take him.

Why?

DH gets so annoyed at people who bring thier little dogs into stores too. He (and I basically agree with him) doesn't think dogs belong in stores. But, we always argue about the big vs little thing. The reason I, personally, would "tolerate" (I still think it's wrong, but it doesn't personally bother me as much) a little dog in a carrier, is b/c it is then contained with it's owner. If it pees or otherwise, it does so in it's own little home. It isn't going to jump on me, or sniff me, etc. I would be just as annoyed at big vs little if the little one is walking around.

Seeing Eye dogs are working, so I think that's the exception. I love my dog, my peanut is the cutest thing ever, but the only store she'll set foot in is Petco, because, well, it's where the pets go!

I grew up with BIG dogs, shepards that had heads the size of a small child. I love big dogs, but even I will admit that I get nervous around dogs I don't know, so I'd be alittle apprehensive to see one.

thanks for letting me know this as I will watch now and be the first one up to the manager to get them out of the store, I have to say ANY store that allows dogs or cats in their stores are great risk factors for disease! Period!
in a pet store if I choose to go into a store that allows pets thats one thing I know to prepare myself with germs from an animal, but to walk into a supermarket or CVS and there is an animal in there NO WAY- in excusable. and for those that do this, you are wrong, there is a place for animals- remember they ARE animals not kids and they dont belong in certain places. no matter how clean we keep them, not everyone does and we shouldnt have to be exposed to it.

I am a HUGE animal person as I have 5 cats and 2 dogs and I would NEVER bring them into a store like that! not even the pet store- I dont want them catching something from another animal either.
