gutted. there is no counter space!

you need all new appliances, cabinet refacing and new flooring...if you are going to spend that kind of money, you might as well gut and redesign the whole space

I couldn't deal it would have to be gutted. The cabinets look like the old aluminum style to me so I don't think they could be refaced. I could live with the bathroom before I could live with the kitchen.

If it were me, I'd want to gut it. If you don't have the money for that, you could try an inexpensive fix until you do - a new floor, Rustoleum paint on the cabinets, new paint. The appliances look really small so I don't think I could live with that. It depends how much you plan to cook and entertain.

I would actually look into refacing those cabinets. The old cabinets are soo much bigger than what you get now, and by refacing them you will retain the space while still making it look nice. My IL's kitchen has those old cabinets.

ok- I kind of like the cabinets in a retro way- if the applanices were also 40 retro- I might keep it

but I don't like the size od the stove- and there is no counter space- so I would gut it

They are the original Metal Levitt house Cabinets and the original Stainless Steel Sink top - Karissa still has that Stainless steel sink top in her kitchen...I like that.....The cabinets and the floor would have to go. I would gut it.

We were lucky, our cabinets in our levitt cape were replaced.

Personally I could live with that kitchen for a year or so before i would go out of my mind. I also want to say - that my kitchen growing up had that same linoleum until i was about 10 or 11. Awful! Just awful!!!!

I agree.....so did my oparents house. Chat Icon

Re: Look at Pic do you think it needs to be gutted

Those look like original Levitt cabinets - we have them in our garage, they are great for storage out there. But when we first moved in, everyone told us that we should try to sell them because some people consider them antiques. The framework is all metal - including the shelves inside, so you'd probably have to install new cabinets, etc., rather than just refacing.

Where is the refrigerator? (Ours is down the hall where it looks like they have a built in). I swear when we re-do the kitchen my refrigerator will be in there!

Also check on the oil burner in the kitchen - it will take a lot of $$ to move if its still in there.

This is an excellent post.

No, that kitchen does not NEED to be gutted at all. It looks pristine. Let's just assume for the sake of argument that we all looked at this house and it is perfectly clean and neat..but just not to our taste. In this market if this house was in a neighborhood you absolutely wanted to be in you could easily sacrifice what you want for what you need right now. To get in. If you want to be on LI, right now many of us just have to bite the bullet and actually WAIT for the things we want, and live with the things we NEED. (God forbid right?) This kitchen, while absolutely not ideal in my eyes (I want granite, stainless, gorgeous cabinets, pot racks, etc one day.....just like everyone else) is all that I would NEED to get started. Yes, it sucks that in this day and age a house like this is expensive....but no..this does not NEED to be gutted at all. It's also all our parents and grandparents needed...why the hell are we so spoiled?

I think the biggest problem facing prospective homeowners right now is the fact that they feel they are entitled to have way too much. It's a privledge to own a home, and yes it's also a right, but it's also something you have to work very hard for (well most of us anyway). If I could bake a cake in that oven, cook a turkey, if I could fit my plates in those clean cabinets...I'm fine with it until I earn the gourmet kitchen that I want.

when us prospective homeowners are paying twice the amount the seller paid five years ago with the same sh*tty kitchen, i dont think i am acting entitled.

The house we're buying is literally 2 minutes away from you!!!

I think as long as the structure is good and everything else is cosmetic, I'd live with it til enough $$ is saved for a renovation.

Our new kitchen has a black/red theme. Kind of funky, but don't know if I'd live with it forever. The living/dining area has an Asian theme. Not my style at all, but it'll be changed over time.

We'll be neighbors!!!! Chat Icon Chat Icon

But it doesn't matter what people paid then, it matters what house prices are now. And as long as you are paying less for this house than you would for a house with a brand-new kitchen then that is a fair price to ask.

BTW, you could go with a retro theme, get retro appliances and wall hangings and it might look really funky. Retro is in style now.

Having recently done an outdated kitchen over, I will agree with it needing to be gutted. Lots of potential though

yes, that would be a goal of mine to gut the kitchen and that bathroom. I personally wouldn't buy the house knowing I have to gut the two most expensive rooms in the house. JMPO

Chat Icon Chat Icon I agree!

Honestly I think the house is priced fairly, the kitchen *looks* spotless just dated, no big deal. I could live with it making small modifications until I could afford to redo to my liking.

If it worked for the previous owners I don't understand why alot of times people expected them to update before selling. Chat Icon
