While it may not seem important to you, I am sure it is important to them. My cousin is graduating the 8th grade and we are very proud of her. We are going to attend graduation and give her a gift. She is very special to me, therefore this event is special in my eyes. As will her prom, hs graduation, college, wedding, etc....

I guess what I am trying to say is look past the "present" and focus on the accomplishment and special occasion. Everyone is always complaining about gift giving, while it may takes its toll on your wallet, it is so much more than that. At least that is the way I look at it. I do it because I want too and I don't complain about it. Especially if the person is important to me. JMHO

you are right it is an acomplishment but why the wedding style party?Chat Icon

Why not? If your not paying for it, why would you care?

WHY because this is why these Dumb ARSE kids HAVE to HAVE BMW and MERCEDES and a cell phone at 5... Let the kid work for crap.. Ok yes they graduated jr. High woohooo but when the graduate High School you are going to have to top that and college top that and wedding shower top that and wedding top that and baby shower YUP Top that.... Its stupid

IMO of course!

I guess that is one way of looking at it. A negative one IMO.

Personally, I just think it is a little over the top. Not even in the aspect that you have to keep doing better for each occasion. I think it's a little ridiculous when you are invited to a birthday for a six year old...and you are an adult...at a catering hall. The guest feels obligated to give a "worthy" gift and it gets to be a bit much. I find myself turning down invites cuz I cannot afford to buy gifts for these occasions.
I can understand a Christening or Communion...or HS graduation...but birthdays and grade school graduations should be on a smaller scale. Whatever happened to having your friends over for your birthday? I always feel like these parents are all competing to see who can do better.
Anyway...that's just my opinion, I could be wrongChat Icon Chat Icon

I think these milestones are a big deal to the kids and of course their parents so if they want to celebrate it, so be it. An invite to a party does not make it a requirement to attend in most cases.
