Re: Reading...Hottest thing in Hollywood for now

I always loved reading. I remember as a kid we would take weekly trips to the library and we were able to take out 2 books at a time. I was in 2 book clubs in law school until they merged into one and I am still in a book club. I love it! DH laughs at me because i can read a book in a day or two.

I think its great that more people are reading now. Remember when the new Harry Potter book came out- kids were lining up to get it.

I think the combination of Oprah and Harry Potter has really gotten so many people into reading. I don't care why people are doing it- I am just glad to see they are!!

I agree with you!!! She has done a good job, but public libraries are the greatest source for books and learning, not Oprah!

As a librarian I have to thank you for saying that. That's really nice to hear!!! Chat Icon

I agree with you 100%. I think people shouldnt read a book just because Oprah says its great. People should be reading for knowledge, entertainment etc...
Unfortunately people like me do not want to see another book as long as they live. Ive been through so many text books and NOW I AM DONE! To think I can read for enjoyment now...WOW!

Maybe what we find frustrating is that there are many "unsung heroes" doing great things for literacy (or the environment, or human rights to give other examples) who don't get the recognition they deserve. When a celebrity attaches their name to a cause, it seems like the general public accepts their views as the "end all, be all".

i am sure...but is that a celebrity's fault?
WHY criticize Oprah for at least attempting to do something VERY FEW, if any attempted to do?

And no it isn't the end of be all....that is up for US to decide...

Again...WHY are we talking neg about Oprah for this?

I don't know if it is an attack on Oprah as much as it is a question: why do celebs have to be attached to something to make it "worthy" or "cool" - I see it more as an attack on celebrity culture than Oprah herself.

I don't think it's a bad thing that someone got more people to read even if it's a celebrity thing Chat Icon Oprah obviously has the influence to encourage masses of people to read, I can't say a bad thing about it. I'd rather have people read what she recommends than nothing at all.
In a Utopian Society we'd all be reading Voliare and Shakespeare but the reality is many people across America don't even pick up the TV guide let alone a book - if Oprah's book club let even 100 people pick up a book, then it's worth it IMO.

I understand and I cannot say I disagree with you but I also see the other side as well. Even take Bono, who I think does amazing work for poverty and should be commended. There are thousands of nameless, faceless people without his money and celebrity that do the same work and cannot get people to recognize the horrors in Africa. It seems that a famous person has to attached to something to get it recognized.

I commend celebrities who use their fame for a cause but I do wonder why it has to take that to get people to give $, read, whatever. I do not blame the celebs, it just raises questions. JMO.

Good point but again...it is US, our society that does this

we glorify these people as if they are gods...

Look at all the "celeb reality tv now.....it is friggin sad...
sad that we find it interesting to watch Danny Bonaduce act like an azzhole for all of us to be entertained...

But IMO this comes from US....
Because if we didnt' want to see it then it wouldn't be on tv

You're totally right, it is the American public. It just makes me wonder why it has to be that way.

I didn't read the whole thread, just the last few posts before mine so forgive me for not taking everything into account.
I agree with what you are saying in the abstract, but in reality it's the voices that are heard that have the influence in our society - it's the politicians, the celebrities, and the athletes that have that voice.
My friends father runs a charity for Africa, his recognition in no way, shape, or form can compete with Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt's efforts. They are recognizable figures and I bet they have done more to get people to notice Africa than my friends dad had has in over 20-years.
I think it's terrible, but then I don't fault A.J. and B.P. because they did a GOOD thing and that outweighs the "because they are a celebrity" issue for me.

I know. There are a zillion magazines, shows, etc. Don't get me wrong, I like celebs, fashion, etc but to a small extent compared to the American public. I don't do things because Oprah, Jennifer Aniston, Bono, etc tell me to. I think it is sad that people do.
