Hey Redhead: Guess who might be doing some catching for the Yanks

In my favorite Nelson voice..... HA HA

I would laugh my a$$ off if he ends up with the Yanks. Him and Posada would (without a doubt) be the worst defensive catching combination in all the majors. Chat Icon

This is the same management that put Darryl Strawberry and Doc Gooden in pinstripes.

Come on... we all know George has that thing for the ex-mets (Cone / Straw / Gooden). Chat Icon

Red: I sure hope you are right... because you know if Piazza signs... I definitely WON'T let you live this one down. Chat Icon

I am just posting what I read from the newspapers this morning. These comments didn't originate from the orange. Chat Icon

But you know what I wonder? How many Yankees (that Red hates) would have to make the team in order for her to jump ship to another team.

So far we have on the list:
Damon
Piazza (maybe - LOL)
Johnson
Clemens (oh wait he is gone - well maybe not LOL)
Giambi

I could think of more... but i'll end it here. Chat Icon

I didn't see anywhere in that article about Piazza doing any catching on the Yankees...

It discusses him POSSIBLY coming to be a DH.

THAT is a BIG IF...Let's face it, Piazza is having a hard time giving up his catcher status...Which i feel was reinforced foolishly by the Mets clubhouse...
He is no longer a good catcher..
BUT i do believe that hewill opt to go the the Phillies to be that catcher he dreams he might be once again...Chat Icon

Yankees have Bernie already so they aren't going to go outter limits to get Piazza IMO.

AND FYI:
I never had any problems with Clemens (yes it is the girl in me who thinks the man is HOTChat Icon ....YES I ADMIT IT)
I was fine with Johnson coming..

never cared for Giambi or obviously long hair...

So lets say IF he comes to the Yankees... you honestly think he will NEVER catch a SINGLE game? Chat Icon He is obviously coming as a DH... but he will catch 10 games at least (either as a starter or as a reserve/pinch hitter).

And since when did the Mets clubhouse reinforce him wanting to be a catcher? Thats total hogwash. It was the Mets clubhouse (Omar) who SPECIFICIALLY TOLD Piazza that he would never catch full-time on the Mets again. They asked him to come in as a backup and he refused.

It was Piazza's wrongdoing and him (just like all the FA catchers this year) really overestimated the market and are getting screwed.

Agreed. Why would we cry about it? I am sure Piazza would put up big numbers in that bandbox little league stadium they have in the Bronx.

The only place I DONT want to see Piazza go is back to the Dodgers because every Met fan that knows a thing or two wants him to go into the hall (ON THE FIRST BALLOT) as a NY Met.

Pill, if Piazza comes to the Yanks, it will purely because of the name and his association with the Mets

Classic Steinbrenner

get a former Met or Red Sox guy to hit a HR and make a good play so he can play it on the YES Network 8 gazillion times

And we all thought George had the hard-on for the ex-Mets. Now he moved into ex-RedSox players as well.

I guess if you can't beat them... might as well get them to join ya. Chat Icon

Re: Hey Redhead: Guess who might be doing some catching for the Yanks

Piazza's agents contact Yankees
General manager Cashman considering club's options
By Mark Feinsand / MLB.com

NEW YORK -- Mike Piazza to the Yankees? It's unlikely, but not impossible.

Two published reports on Tuesday indicated that Piazza's agents reached out to the Yankees on Monday, gauging the team's interest in the catcher.

Where that interest level resides, however, is unclear.

Newsday reported that although the Yankees "can't yet be considered aggressive pursuers" for Piazza, general manager Brian Cashman did not dismiss the idea.

"We're fairly set. Our designated hitter spot is taken by Bernie Williams and Andy Phillips. But I'll keep an open mind," Cashman told the paper. "I'm always open to consider any possibility that may help the ballclub."

The GM said the organization had not yet weighed all of the pros and cons with regard to Piazza.

The Daily News' Bill Madden also reported that Cashman spoke with Piazza's agents on Monday, but he went on to write that "the Yankees' response was that there was no room at the inn."

According to the paper's sources, Piazza has minimal offers from the Padres, Phillies and Indians to play a reserve role, but none of them are anywhere near his believed asking price of $7-8 million a year. It is more likely that Piazza will land a one-year deal somewhere in the range of $2-3 million.

Piazza's presence would give Yankees manager Joe Torre a third catcher on the roster, as well as a legitimate option at the DH spot. After playing his entire career in the National League, a move to the American League seems likely for the 37-year-old veteran.

Phillips, Williams and Jason Giambi are expected to see most of the at-bats at DH, while starter Jorge Posada and backup Kelly Stinnett are set to share catching duties.

Posada's contract includes a clause which states that should he start 81 games behind the plate, it would automatically kick in a $12 million option for 2007. Cashman has said that the team has no plans to avoid that scenario, as Posada will play as much as he has in recent years
