Kelly Clarkson won't let American Idol use her songs!
PASADENA, Calif. - Singer Kelly Clarkson, who vaulted to fame as the first "American Idol" winner in 2002, is not letting any of her songs be used by new contestants on the show. A spokesman for Clarkson insisted it's nothing personal, but the stance prompted a public scolding from "American Idol" judge Simon Cowell. "I think that by ignoring the show you're ignoring the audience who put you there," Cowell said Tuesday.

I don't know. I think that considering the money she made for them, she's paid her dues. Don't they start off with a contract where they are basically owned by the show? I'm sure after being part of that for a while, you just want your stuff, to be yours.

I absolutely agree
I understand her wanting to distance herself a bit and break away from the show BUT she would be NOWHERE without the show either

I agree! She probably didn't make a penny off of her first album- it probably all went back to American Idol which would be why she doesn't want them to have anything else...

Doesn't she get royalties if contestants sing her song?

Anywho. I happened to see a clip of a girl (I think?) singing a Paula Abdul song and I thought that was horrible.
Why would you pick a Paula Abdul song?
Maybe KC just doesn't want that type of thing going on. MAYBE, she just wants contestants to have their own style and not try to copy her---not in an arrogant way, but maybe in a big sister like: "you can do it!" kind of way.
Who knows, really.

The contract that you sign even just at the first audition is unreal!!! By the time you reached the top 10/12 you have signed the next few years of your life away. Just going off of contracts that I have signed as far as recording, which has never been close to that big, the recording artist doesn't make as much money as they should. Artists are willing to do that to get their name out there and have a label, but once the ties are cut I can understand her wanting to keep the songs that weren't written/produced by the show to herself. They have the rights to her first albulm already. She is now writing her own songs and has a new producer, she doesn't have to be AI's puppet forever.

Unless I'm totally going crazy, I could've SWORN that someone auditioned last night to "Since You've Been Gone" ...
Or is it that she just doesn't want them using her material for when its down to the final 12?
Weird either way..

You're right. Someone sang that last night. I don't think she can prevent the people auditioning in the 1st round from singing her songs.

I believe that in the first few the contestant can choose whatever they want to sing. When it gets down to the top 32 (or whatever) they hand out lists of pre-approved songs. I figure she didn't give them permission to include any of her songs on that list.

I agree...If I were her, I would be proud if someone sang a song, but hopefully not butcher it.
I guess I just see it as she paid her dues to AI by working solely for them for several years. Making records, making a really bad movie and doing AI tours. When is enough enough? She is trying to have some say over her artistic material and her career I think its admirable.

I disagree. I think she totally did the right thing. She has done enough for them, fulfilled her contract and did what she agreed to do. With her sophomore album she has broken free of this 'American Idol' tag and really proved herself. Letting AI use her music could be a real bad career move for her. Good for her!
