There was a knock at the door...

I went to it and looked outside and there was a man. I opened the door a crack (only after I was sure he was far enough away that if I needed to slam it shut I could) and he asked to rake my lawn or wash my car because he needed money. He said he and his wife were living out of a van on Main Street and he needed money to pay the owner of the van so they could sleep there tonight. He wanted $12. Does that sound like a drug $$ amount??

Re: There was a knock at the door...

I would have given him the $12 and asked him to leave. It's sad because there are so many people going through so much and we can't trust anyone nowadays. Chat Icon

Re: There was a knock at the door...

I had a few bucks laying on my mantle right by my door. I basically paid him $$ to get away from my home. It freaked me out considering I have 2 babies in the house!!

I wasnt going to answer the door but my daughter was at the door looking at who was knocking.

I did call the police after he left just because it made me feel so uncomfortable. I gave them his description and told them the way he was headed. I dont think there is anything he did wrong I just didnt feel it was right.

agreed.
I rarely answer the door at home...no good could come of it and it its family/friends...they will call first...or use their cell to call from my driveway.

Re: There was a knock at the door...

when I lived in jersey city we had a homeless dude that would clean our courtyard, shovel snow, etc- i know he bought drugs with it- but I figured might as well let him work for it than steal from someone. Not giving him the $ isn't going to stop him from doing the drugs

Same here. Its sad that scam artists ruined it for people that really need the help.

Re: There was a knock at the door...

It does sound like drug $.
There's a woman who goes on LIRR trains asking for $19 for her and her three children. She's been on the subway, too. Always $19; sometimes it's for her kids, sometimes it's for a train ticket. Scam artists make you skeptical of EVERYONE.

Re: There was a knock at the door...

He looked pretty clean. Gap sweatshirt, jeans without holes, (coulda been a salvation army clothes, I dont know)i dont remember the shoes, OLDER mountain bike, back garbage bag which he left by the street. He said he hadnt eated anything and he was in a bad place. THat he knew it was a weird thing to do to ask people for money. But he really looked like he wanted to work for it, not looking for a handout.

He saw Jeremy as he was walking away and said he lost his 7 year old son 6 months ago, then he had an actual tear in his eye. I saw him ride away wiping his eyes. I dont know what to think...

Re: There was a knock at the door...

I dont know what kind of drugs they would buy for $12 except maybe a big bottle of Tylenol.

I would be scared too though if I was home alone. At the same time I'd be worried if I didnt help them what might he do.

Maybe I would let him wash the car - outside only - and keep it locked?

Re: There was a knock at the door...

$12 would buy pseudophedrine (Sudafed)...it's only sold at the registers now in the drugstores..I noticed last week. It's a weird amt of $...it's probably NOT for a sandwich if you get my drift!

eta: sudafed is used to make meth...

Re: There was a knock at the door...

I never would have opened the door. I would have told him he had ten seconds to get off the property before I dialed 911. And I definitely wouldn't give him money, fearing that will only encourage him to come back.
