Re: Rough Day in the NICU

First, your son is beautiful!

Second, I agree with this:

The monitor is a good thing. I have several friends with 32-31-29 week olds - all had monitors. It was a huge peace of mind that something was there to monitor their hearts & their breathing. So while it seems like another issue to deal with, it may let you sleep better.

My BIL's nephew was on the monitor (I believe his SIL was 12 weeks early?) and they said it was comforting having the monitor.

Sorry she freaked you out. The nurses in the NICU see so much every day that to them this is really not a big thing, sometimes they just don't get it.

Good Luck!!! One of my sons was in the NICU for a 7 days and the other 29 so if you need to talk fm me. It really was the hardest thing to leave him there and to feel so helpless and the only relief I got was talking to other moms that had been thur it too.

Re: Rough Day in the NICU

Deb, I understand exactly how you feel. My litle guy gave us alot of scares while he was in the NICU....I did take the CPR class, and I am so glad I did because I ended up needing it the 1st wk we had him home. James did come home on Oxygen and a Pulsox Machine. And every time that machine beep, I jumped. But everything did get better and my little monkey is into everything now. James was in the NICU a total of 72 days, and continued the Oxygen at home for another 42 days.

I know how fustrating and nerve racking all this can be...and I am so sorry that any parent or baby has to go through this.

thanks for asking.
We went to see him today and his heart rate dropped another 3 times.

BUT

It happened during a feeding and we got to talk to the doctor today and he let us know that he was not that concerned when it happens during a feeding because he might just forget its ****, swallow and BREATH.

So we are back to watch and wait.

Re: Rough Day in the NICU

Ok.. I totally feel your pain and can completely sympathize with what you are going through. My son, Zachary was born last August at 37 weeks and the was born with RDS (respiratory distress syndrome) Only 1 in 100,000 full term babies are born with this lung disease. He was put on a respirator for 5 days and we lost him at one point right after he was born for 6 minutes. After he came off the respirator, the NICU really thought that because he had such a dramatic turn around that things would steadily head in an all together good direction, but they could not wean him off of his oxygen. After 4 weeks in the NICU, my husband and I decided to take him home. (We had a 10 month old daughter at home) The NICU made us go through CPR refresher courses and we came on on oxygen and a pulse ox/heart monitor.

I am happy to tell you that Zachary has since come off his oxygen and is a big boy. He is 22lbs and approaching his very 1st birthday on August 19th. I am glad to tell you that there is a light at the end of your tunnel and things will be ok. I am new to this site and I don't really know what happened with Joseph, but he seems to be a strong little guy, just like mine!

Just keep your faith and will be alright. My family will keep him in our prayers... Good luck to your little guy!!!!
