Oh My!!!! I feel soooo much better about my house now-lol!!
I was just annoyed with my dh and the caulking that needs to be re-done in my tub but that is going to be an EASY job compared to the things people have in their homes!
I just want to go and clean my house now because I am REALLY grossed out!!

The best, however, was the "colonial" with the stucco'd ceiling that was spackled with silver glitter. How in the heck does that come off??

One of the condos we saw had a photo of a really old woman in a bikini hanging on the wall. Chat Icon

We also saw a condo where the bottom floor had severaal smaller rooms put in- we really thought they were bondage chambers or something. We just could not figure it out.

Re: Scary things you saw during an open house - or when you were looking at a house

hmmm.....What else, there were so many.

We went to this one house in N merrick. It was a cape that was renovated. The outside of the house was dark, new windows, long driveway, 2 car garage, small yard, Cellar doors (Didnt like)

You walked into the rear door and you were in a bedroom which was right off the strange shaped kitchen, which wasnt redone.

The floor was really dark cherry wood - beautiful.

The dining room was a boxed in room, and the living room was in front of the house, small and boxy. You needed to knock that wall down that was dividing the two.

The bathroom was nice.

Upstairs was unfinished and the chimney looked like it was going to fall down

Then there was the cellar. You could enter from the inside of the house too. You had to duck to walk around in there, and there was Floor Jacks holding up the whole house - thats not something good. They were asking over $409k. The house was small, and very odd. There was nothing really scary about the house, just odd.

Re: Scary things you saw during an open house - or when you were looking at a house

I just saw this thread...love it.

When we were looking, we went to see a house in Piscataway, NJ. A huge Colonial. No one was home, we were with our agent. Walked in, the living room looked like something out of animal house. A pool table in the middle of the room, snake and iguana tanks (with snakes and iguanas in them Chat Icon ) in a few different corners. Crappy couches, sheets slung over the windows. As we walk through the house, it seemed to me like a bunch of teenagers with no adult supervision lived there, I swear. Or their adult was a Hells Angels biker. Everything was a mish mosh , mixed funiture, old food laying around, cigarettes, beer, etc. The best part was all the writing on the walls - yep, writing, in pen, pencil, marker, crayon. ON the walls. We head down to the pitch black basement and turn the overhead light on. We look to the left and there's the boiler etc. Look to the right and I am staring face to face with a giant Rottweiler in a crate who at first I could only see his eyes glowing Chat Icon he started barking and we all run upstairs as fast as we could! I did feel bad though, I mean, who leaves an animal in a dark basement. Upstairs wasnt any better, same crap everywhere, disgusting, writing on the walls, dirty laundry, mix & match crap furniture. I was just beyond creeped out. I look out in the backyard and there is another poor dog tied up to a post on a chain. Chat Icon I just wanted out of there!!!

When we were looking for a co-op a few years back we went to look at 1 in Ridge. Well the place was a DISASTER.. I mean toys from the kids everywhere and just thrown on the floor thorughout the house. But the absolute weirdest/scariest thing was the homeowner called his kids into the kitchen as we were walking past and said "Hey, its time for lunch" to his kids and then proceeded to give them each a Flintstones vitamin! Re: Scary things you saw during an open house - or when you were looking at a house

We went to an open house last weekend. I was looking in all of the closets at the space. One of the closets had over 200 boxes of PORN!! Now I am very naive (I have never even seen a porn or the box to it before). At first I thought it was computer games till I looked closer and there was a picture of a penis and two girls laughing on the side of the box! I was mortified and the agent was right behind me!! Of course DH was oblivious to it! So every time we drive by the house I call it the porn house.

My question is if you are having an open house wouldn't you hide them some where else? It was a total turn off on the house! All I could think about is if he gizzed all over the walls. It reminded me of that dateline where they went into a hotel with a black light and it was on the walls!Chat Icon

we've been to quite a few scary houses.

the one that was by FAR the worst was a disgustingly FILTHY house in Sayville. it was pure filth and reeked from pet poop. I think they must have had 20 cats. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon and obviously did not clean at ALL.

the kitchen was a joke! it was literally 6 feet long and fugly. the whole house was trashed and so small, it was really pathetic. to make matters worse, the "lady of the house" ran a beauty salon upstairs and it was GROSS!! I wouldn't let her cut a dog's hair in that grotesque environment. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

OMG we literally ran out of there!

Re: Scary things you saw during an open house - or when you were looking at a house

We were house hunting 9 years ago, but these are memories that NEVER fade:
*One house we went to had the owner, wearing only underwear laying on the floor in his living room playing with a toy train collection. He was in his 40's at least. The kitchen had filth EVERYWHERE. We didn't need to see more...we left pronto!

*Another house wreaked of dog pee so badly, we walked in, turned around, and left!

* ANother house clearly beloged to people who love TAXIDERMY!! There were stuffed (once alive) animals all over the place. So weird. Again, we quickly left that house.

People, if you know you're having an open house...just make the place presentable!! People are so strange!!

Re: Scary things you saw during an open house - or when you were looking at a house

There's 3 that stand out in my mind...

The 1st one was in Selden (high ranch). The outside was really, really terrible so I was reluctant to go in. But the R/E said to keep an open mind. I did and we went in. The windows were covered with heavy, heavy draperies and the shades were drawn (this was early afternoon). So it was basically super dark in the house. I kept staring intensely as we hustled through at the patterned wallpaper on the wall that kept appearing to "move". It wasn't wallpaper, it was roaches! When I realized it and said "We have to go NOW!" to the agent, he was like "We can't be rude, just see the kitchen. We walked through and the asbestos tiles were coming undone from the floor. I stepped on one and about nine roaches ran out from underneath that. Didn't care what the homeowner thought - I RAN down those stairs and out the door!

The second one was in C.I. (my brother and I were looking into investment properties). The house was pretty small but only about $40,000. Well, we quickly found out why. It looks like a drug raid happened and the house was left as-is. There was food on the stove in the pot, food on the table, etc. The chairs were knocked over in the kitchen. The back door looked like it has been broken off the hinges. The bathroom was reminiscent of a Beavis and Butthead episode with C R A P in the sink (yes the real deal crap), all over the toliet seat, on the floor, etc. In the bedroom was the former occupants clothes hanging in the closet and all of their personal effects. Right by the front door (in the living room) was a nice 3' wide hole in the floor and you could see right to the basement. It was the most bizzare thing I've ever seen. We were all taking bets on someone opening the fridge because we figured there would be body parts in there. As bad as it was, we were DUMB to walk away from property for $40,000 (this was in 1999). Especially since the area is now georgeous!

The third was a tiny bungalow in Mastic that was for sale for $26,000 (this was in 1991). Right square in the middle of the bathroom floor was the opening to the basement. No door, no trap, no nothing. Just an opening with no banister around it and some stairs. Imagine if you were doing your thing as the meter man was coming up from checking the box?Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I just remembered another one...

We found a listing online that we asked our agent to take us to. the house was vacant. it was in a very questionable area of an town we were looking in… we didn’t even know this town had a “seedy” part.

Anyway, so we get to the house and there are gang symbols spray painted on the side of the house and the garage door. If that were not bad enough, the house had a detached garage and there were homeless people shacked up there!! Chat Icon

Re: Scary things you saw during an open house - or when you were looking at a house

I went to see a house in East Setauket - a lovely neighborhood.

We thought the house was vacant - we peeked in the windows before we made the appointment and it was empty.

It turns out that it is a bunch of sushi-restaurant workers living there (the rest. owner owns the house) - it smelled like urine/fish/cats. there were beerbottels and ash trays everywhere, the sink and toilets were all rusted. we couldnt even get into one bedroom because it was locked. The agent (it was the sellers agent) said, oh they must have let someone stay here.

We counted 12 mattresses scattered throughout the house...and probably 30 pairs of shoes lying everywhere. I refused to go into the bathrooms.

And another…

Same “seedy” area as the gang symbol house – right around the corner actually. This was another listing we asked our agent about. It smelled SO bad in there. I swear to God, it was just nauseating. It smelled like a cross between dog poop, wet dog, and rotting food! I couldn’t look at anything at all because I had to concentrate on not throwing up! finally I started to gag and I just walked right out of the house. I didn’t give a rats butt if I offended anyone. “I” was offended. Chat Icon

The seller was in the driveway working on some kind of DIY project and definitely knew how I left about his house. I was gasping for air! My DH ran out after me and told me I was GREEN! Chat Icon

readers digest version - it needed to be burned to the ground

longer version - tiny rooms, bugs crawling everywhere and in and out of cracks in the ceiling and walls. Chat Icon a pile of dishes in the dirty disgusting sink about 5 feet high. grease and filth everywhere in the kitchen. cob webs in every corner. yea, it needs TLC alright Chat Icon
