Job advice (esp in business/finance)

My FH has been working at his job for exactly 3 mos. he had a week where he was late a lot but since then he's been doing well. It's just past the 3 month trial period.

This has happenned once before, but FH had a few projects due and one prohect was due "sometime this week", and then the other one had hard thursday deadline, so FH worked really hard on the hard dealine one...then yesterday FH 's boss tells him that the first project the :"sometime" project was really due last night, so FH was at work literally until 4am working on it. The boss keeps yelling at FH and telling him he knew it was due Tues, but DOug even showed him all the emails that said it didn't have a hard deadline... and the boss siad he told him verbally. FH is really good about that and would know if he told hi verbally. I think the boss was in a jam over it and needed someone to blame. But he started being really abusive to FH, calling him names like a "dumb f--K" etc.

It isn't the first time.

Do you think he should say something to someone, or in the interest of keeping his job just stay quiet? I just can't stand the idea of him being abused at work Chat Icon

ETA: it's not that he neglected the project which he was told had a soft deadline, he just prioritized the one with the ahrd dealine over it, which makes total sense to me

I work in finance and we do have to deal with a lot of strict deadlines. And it's true what they say...everything rolls downhill. And because of all the pressure, people tend to lose their cool. I'll keep my mouth shut and deal with the fits and tantrums, as long as it not directed at me.

But no one should EVER have to put up with someone speaking to them that way. That's where I draw the line. I've been in that situation before, and yes, I went to HR, but not until months of putting up with a bad situation.

Before going to HR with the matter, perhaps your FH could speak to his boss tomorrow and simply tell him that he didn't appreciate being spoken to that way.

If it continues to happen, then your FH should start to write down all of the times he gets yelled at, as well as the hours he works, and the time he put in working on certain projects.

If the problem doesn't get solved, you FH might consider switching departments within the company if that's even possible...

I think writing it down is a good idea. He did tell his boss he really didn't appreciate the abusive language, and that's what I feel it really is, abusive, but he did not relent.

As far as the deadline, I think that's the real world in business. Sometimes the boss screws up and expects to put the blame on someone else, I think that happens fairly frequently.

As far as being sworn at, that is something I would not tolerate. I would document every encounter like this. I would try to stand up to the boss and deal with it directly first, before going to HR.

Thanks ladies. He wasn't complaing about the deadline. I mean he worked all night to do it. I just gave that as background, I just can see how he feels and it makes me so angry to see him talked to like that, and I don't know what advice to give him b/c I don't know about the business world and I don't want him to lose his job for complaining about his boss (and they'd have the lateness as an excuse)

I'll pass on your advice to him

I also work in finance, and it doesn't what industry, or position, NO ONE, NO ONE has the right to speak to you in an unprofessional manner. Tempers rise in deadline situations, but if you can't keep you cool, then leave the room. I would complain, or ask to have a meeting with this person and their manager. If this person is the "big boss" then either speak to them about their abusive comments (they don't get the job done any faster), or start looking elsewhere for a job. These people don't change unless it is brought to their attention.

I agree with the above posters that in the business world sometimes there are no deadlines, meaning you are expected to know when things are due. The thing is he was told "Sometime this week" as late as Monday, and then Tuesday he was told "it's due tonight"...I don't think there was any way he coud have known that. he's not psychic.

zzzzeven if he was totally worng, no one should talk to him like that

He needs to do as instructed above and keep a record of it. especially that he approached his boss & told him that the abusive language was inappropriate.

Sorry he is going through this. I know that the time thing is a huge deal for him.Chat Icon

I also want to point out that this is after he worked ALL weekend, both days he went in, and he's been working late almost every night for weeks...until 9 or later...

I wouldn't approach the boss unless re: the language unless it's a very calm moment. The fact is some managers curse - while it's unprofessional & can be considered "hostile", an employee working 3 months would have a hard time proving it unless there were other employees to witness it. Also the fact that he was late for a week would be more than enough to fire him in my book.

I would let it go. I would **** it up. Next time he's given a project, he should send an email confirming deadlines & vague deadlines. If he's told verbally of a deadline, confirm via email. Ask for an email back once a deadline has been firmed up.

I completely agree with this. Unfortunately, this is just how it is in the finance industry sometimes. Especially at smaller companies - there are a lot of egos - and if he complains, he will look like he is not a team player and eventually they would probably let him go. You have to develop a very thick skin in this industry - believe me...... You can't take anything personally.

i get cursed out on a daily basis (my industry, the oil businesss, is very tought and you need THICK skin- so its definitely comprable to the finacne industry)


its part of the job but the pay outweighs the abuse eventually


if he wants to make the big bucks he will need to suuck it up somewtimes

I agree completely. It might be a $hitty way of looking at it, but sometimes you have the bite the bullet.

I work on the trading floor for a major Investment Bank; it's a very hostile and cut-throat environment. You learn to ignore what people say to you, and never take it personally.

I've seen women and men burst into tears after being "yelled" at...needless to say, they were replaced w/in 6 months.

It's not for everyone, and if you can't handle the heat in the kitchen...

I would go & kick the wall in the stairwell. That also helps. They don't give out the stressballs for recreation - it's so you don't strangle your boss.

I agree with Preshy- I don't complaining is going to get him anywhere- but fired maybe

to be honest- I have seen some crazy things on the sales floors where Jake has worked

one kid didn't make enough calls- so they duct taped his phone to his head- it was pretty funny- but to an outsider it can seem harsh- but that's a normal day on a sales floor

Yup Chat Icon Been there done that. I work in a similar industry and I would tell him not to complain. I would however advise him to document the instances of when the abuse occurs so if he is ever approached by HR / someone else regarding this guy's behavior he will have something to back up his story.

I was sexually harrassed for a few years at a former job. Never complained or told anyone there but ended up leaving because I just didn't want to deal anymore. He may get to that point too. Good luck!

jenn, unfortunately, in the business world, especially finance, doug is going to have to get used to this, until he has tenure.

A person with a 3 month tenure and a lateness record will get nowhere fast
