Re: Silly question: Why are Brooklyn and Queens people
I just found this thread and it's cracking me up!!!
I'm a transplanted LI'er and live in Queens now. Try telling Queens people that they do live on LI!! The are adament they don't!!! You may live IN NYC but you live ON Long Island.
And the whole street thing... Not all the numbered streets lead the next sequential number, so try being the person who gets the idea that 168th would follow 167th, but no, some random boulevard follows 167th.
Or schools...oh boy, I have no idea where PS 32 is, but I can tell you all the schools in the Longwood, Commack Npt, Huntington, DixHills, Islip, etc school districts because they have NAMES!!!
Anyway, I still don't get it!

Re: Silly question: Why are Brooklyn and Queens people
This is pretty funny! I have lived in both places and I still consider Queens and Brooklyn "The City" and Nassau and Suffolk "Long Island"... But - here's another question:
Why does Queens have locality names like Flushing, Maspeth, Bayside, etc. and Brooklyn, New York and Bronx are just that?

Re: Silly question: Why are Brooklyn and Queens people
I'm from both actually (live in Queens, from LI) and wondered the same. Its such a juxtaposition. These 2 boroughs are on the island but are part of NYC. Go figure.

I wondered the same. I like how Queens does it. But it makes it seem more like part of the island doing it that way. But I find it more useful to find out where certain places are, where in Brooklyn, I have no idea.

The funny thing is - Brooklyn has areas also - Carroll Gardens, Prospect Heights I'm not sure about the Bronx. I just find it odd that you don't send stuff to Queens, NY but you do send it to Brooklyn, NY.

OMG! I so agree with this! I have lived in Queens my entire life. My cousins lived in Glen Cove. When we went there, it was like going off the planet. Their yard alone had 6 trees in it..I dont see a tree for blocks and blocks in my neighborhood! LOL And the driveways???? Forget about it! And I was always fascinated that you could drive up to a window and get a container of milk!

Re: Silly question: Why are Brooklyn and Queens people
It really depends on where you're from. Very far east in Suffolk, people start to think that Nassau is part of the city. I consider anything north of the 5 boroughs as "upstate". I know several people from Westchester, or other areas just a few miles from Manhatten who get annoyed when I say that...
I never understood how you "city folk" could live in a house where you could shake hands with your neighbor by both leaning out a window!
