If you guys only knew what the stress levels are like all school year long.

If you've never taught you have NO IDEA.

If I didn't have summers off I'd be clinically insane!

FH is a city high school teacher - i know its stressful.

but so is my job, and I dont get a nice summer break, xmas break, feb break or easter break.

Yeah, But you get many other PERKS that we don't get!!!

Why is that people always feel that they have the RIGHT to say something about the teaching profession?

I don't say anything about huge Christmas bonus that others get and I don't! I don't say anything about the huge pay increases some get that I don't! I don't say anything about the fact that I constantly have to keep taking classes and sit in inservice meetings to be updated on things that I already do by people that have been out of my profession longer than I have been alive! I don't say anything about the fact that I rarely get to take a vacation on my vacation days. I have papers, projects and other things to do and that is the time I use to catch up! I don't say anything about the fact that for me to be out sick or take a personal day takes 3 days of work to make that happen BEFORE I CAN BE OUT, where others can just call out sick!

Chat Icon Whatever if you are jealous of it go back to school and be a teacher! It's one of the hardest jobs out there but yet people feel that they can always put it down or make fun of it!

Re: NYC teachers!!!

my final comment - because this is getting ridiculous - is i never said teachers didnt deserve their summer vacations - just dont complain that they are ending- because there are people that have just as stressful jubs that do not get the time off to compensate. - appreciate you have them in the first place.

and go to disney in Feb - only in certain parts of the country do we have that week (my sis in virgina doesnt) - its not super crowded - but dont go the week after xmas (again since FH is a teacher we did) because its packed!!

Like I said, I LOVE LOVE LOVE my job. Hate having to move my classroom and switch grades every year, but I love my students to death, the most difficult ones the most.

But it doesn't mean I don't wish summer could linger a little longer.

Oh and maybe this year instead of being a dedicated teacher, I should be like a normal worker and actually take my lunch and my breaks instead of giving that time to my students for free 1 on 1 tutoring!

of course i am going to complain my summer is almost over. two months off i and the thought of going back to a new class, new kids, new personalitlies, well it equals anxiety...like any job, there are complaints.

I am allowed to complain without having the oh but your teacher thrown in my face....

i am not going to go into the whole teacher defense. anyone who is NOT a teacher cannot truly understand. If I wasnt a teacher, I wouldnt either...

Maybe the reason why she was complaining is that this year, with our new contract (we were without one for 3 years) we have given a lot more time to the DOE without getting much compensation for doing so. We stay later now, lost many things in the new contract like the right to grieve a negative review put in our file -- we can't even contest it AT ALL ... many things that every contract just get worse and worse because the NYC leaders want to abolish unions and don't think we work hard enough for our pathetic paychecks....and this is just another way that we are being forced to give more...

all while being required to continue taking classes for the rest of our working lives. Going to college never ends for a teacher...so we have that too.

There is a very large picture that probably caused her to say that.

I don't think anyone ever said we didn't appreciate it... we, like anyone else, just don't want it to end. Starting a new year is filled with anxiety and stress... It's almost like starting a new job every year...

And while I have done my fair share of relaxing, I've also spent a hunk of my summer (and my paycheck) preparing for the upcoming year.

I would like to put my two sense in here, since I am a teacher also. I TOTALLY agree with the above poster and while I respect your opinion, I do ahve to agree that you don't understand the profession until you're in it YOURSELF. I agree that everyone chooses their profession, and honestly I have to say people who say "it must be nice" really dont' have a clue. I have put in COUNTLESS hours-beyond what is expected for my classroom and students. Not only has it been time away from my family, but also financially as well. I have put in so much EXTRA money into building my library, buying supplies, etc. In addition to getting my masters and classes beyond. Seriously, you have no clue.

I think you should walk a mile in someone's shoes before you pass judgement and then try to defend yourself by saying " you never bashed teachers"

I remember those days from when I had 2 testing grades...

Oh and did I add that they have to give me at least 1 ESL kid this year to fulfill my pay-back time for them paying for a portion of my masters in TESOL?
