First, I just want to say that I'm not looking to cause an argument or anything here, I just wanted to share my opinion on this (which is hard for me - I'm a pretty shy, unconfrontational person). Why is it socially acceptable to put down people who are too thin? To me, making fun of anyone's weight, whether they're too thin or too heavy, is hurtful. This subject hits home with me - I've been underweight all my life, yes I eat, no I'm not anorexic, this is just how my body is, and I have been made fun of plenty of times for it. I've just never understood why it is "okay" to make fun of underweight people.

I think there is so much stress in her life that she keeps losing weight. Im sure drugs might have helped too.

As someone who has been overweight I can say I know how it feels to grow up being called names. Today while at work a group of cub scouts where walking down the aisle and I heard them say "whenever that girl walks we always go BOOM BOOM BOOM EARTHQUAKE" I wanted to cry cause I felt bad for her. Ive been there.

Having said that I understand what you are saying catsmeow about people thinking its ok to make fun of skinny people. The problem with this is that BOTH Nicole Richie and Lindsay Lohan where a little Chunky (according to people not me I wish I could have looked the way they did) and they lost weight WAY to fast. Which has people wondering hmmm...

Thank you exotica776 and june262004 for your thoughtful comments. Yes, I can definitely understand the problem with people who were at a perfectly healthy, fit weight losing a lot of weight quickly and becoming underweight. That’s definitely not healthy, I agree with you completely. I hope for their sakes that if they lost weight so drastically because of sickness, drugs, stress, an addiction, even vanity, that they get the help they need to be their healthy weight again. Society and the media in general have such a warped perception of what is “beautiful” that is so incredibly harmful and wrong. Even a majority of models have eating disorders, and then there are girls who develop eating disorders and/or a low self esteem b/c of this ridiculous idea of “beauty.” If only society taught us to appreciate the beauty in everyone.

As I mentioned above, I have been underweight pretty much my whole life, but this is just how I am. Just as it’s difficult for some people to lose weight, it is difficult for others, like me, to gain weight. I can’t even begin to tell you how many awful things have been said to me about my weight and all of the self esteem issues that I’ve struggled with because of it. The comments on here about how gross, nasty, and scarecrow like she looked, etc. I found to be really hurtful and cruel (and I’m probably not the only one). Even though this is not how she looks naturally, some people are that skinny naturally. Would you really call them gross, etc. to their faces? How is that right? So please keep in mind that when you comment about someone’s looks – you might be inadvertently hurting someone’s feelings out there. No good can ever come out of putting someone down because of their appearance.
