How many hours a week does your husband work?

DH is thinking about leaving his current job to go manage in my brother's restaruant on the East Side. This means a commute 7 days a week.

He is currently taking 4 classes at Baruch and he bartends 2 nights a week.

He wants to keep bartending, keep school, and do 45 hours a week at my brother's place. I grew up with a father who worked a lot, so I am use to this scene. I am glad that he is such a worker, but is this overkill? Should I insist on him dropping the bartending nights? He says it is only for 9 months, and he wants to do a final push(before NC).

I was doing my 9-5 plus OT, and waiting tables on fridays and saturdays, and he insisted I stop serving. He thought it was too much. Should I do the same?

He studies a lot too. He goes to Baruch 2 hours everyday before his first class. He is not grouchy at all, and I make sure to do all his ironing, laundry, and cooking since he has no time.

TIA

Wow, that's an ambitious guy!!

I think you all have to decide what works for you. It sounds like he'll be out most nights - does that mean you'll never see one another? Do you really need the money? I think he also needs to consider his health...do you think he'll be likely to burn out?

My husband usually gets home from work between 7:30 and 8:30 and I think he works too much!!!

I work 60-70 hours a week. My wife doesn't really have an issue with it. The extra cash comes in handy.

He works about 50-65..all depends on how busy he is. He works from 7-5, and then from 6-9 at his side jobs. I hardly see him, and sometimes it gets to me, but I know he is doing it for our future.

It's pretty much how you both feel...

Re: How many hours a week does your husband work?

I do miss him, but I know there is light at the end of the tunnel. I usually don't get home until 7:30 during the week. I will see him on Saturday and Sunday mornings. He is almost done with school, so that will take a ton of this away.

We are planning on moving, so we don't need the money, but it is definitely welcomed.

3 days a week he is able to meet me for lunch between his classes.

I am worried about the burnout though. I was so happy when he told me to quit the serving job, I am wondering how he would feel if I told him to stop the bartending. I am guessing not happyChat Icon thanks

I feel like we sacrafice for the future, and he is almost out of school so I know it will get better.

Just wondering what other wives are living with to compare. I want him to stay healthy, but he swears he is fine. thanks!!

I have been doing 60+ hours straight for about four years. Haven't gotten burned out yet. It does get to me at times... so I will take some time off occasionally. But overall it doesn't kill me because I actually dont mind the work.

I think if he hated what he was doing... it would be a lit more difficult.

that is what I am thinking. He is excited to be joining my brother. He is even more excited about not dealing with Staten Islanders anymore(no offense to anyone, I am one of them). He has been working like this for awhile now, it is just the 7 days a week of commuting which is going to be bad. He misses the last bus at night, and will have to take the ferry, making it almost 2 hours to get home.

Janice, I'm in a really similar position. Fh works from 9am to 5:30 pm, school from 6-10 monday to thursday. friday evening and the weekends are for studying, homework, and the occaisional family outing. If he wanted a PT job on top of that load, I would put my foot down. I think he could swing it, but I would burn out just watching him.

Re: How many hours a week does your husband work?

well mine works from 12-9 and has the weekends off. Although he has offered to get a second job during the weekend but he is also planning on going back to school.
I really don't want him to get a second job so that's why I'm back to looking for a job again.Chat Icon

would he listen if you put your foot down? I totally hear you. I go to parties solo and weddings solo. I never complain about it since he is working. I am going to let him try it, but maybe give it a month and if he isn't doing to good ask that the bar shifts go. Atleast one of them. thanks

He probably would. Extra $ is always good, but we don't NEED it. Trying it out is a good idea. See how both of you feel about it.

Re: How many hours a week does your husband work?

My DH is out of the house 13-15 hours a day usually 6 days a week. It's a lot but when you know it's working toward a goal and it won't be forever it's easier to deal with.

I think your DH will decide on his own to keep or drop the bartendering gig. He may want to keep it on the back burner in case he doesn't like the restaurant with your brother.

I like you, do tons of things by myself, and go to all parties by myself - my extended family calls my DH the phantom since they probably haven't seen him since Christmas

Good luck to you!

NONE! My DH doesn't have a full time job.

I think you should let him be...if he feels like it's getting to be too much he'll know when to stop and what job he's willing to kick to the curb.

Try it out...it may out fine.

Re: How many hours a week does your husband work?

Wow that seems like a lot. I would be afraid he would burn out, but if he can handle it more power to him. Will it affect his studies? Commuting is hard....I do it every day from NJ to NYC. That in itself is like a part time job.

My DH actually has 2 jobs too....

He works full time (40 hrs a week) as a Property Manager in NJ and then drives to the city 3 nights a week to manager another building and works another 12-15 hours a week. His regular job is 7:30am - 4pm and then he works 5-9pm in the city.

He is tired and I never see him during the week Chat Icon but for now we are doing it to pay off some debt. It was his choice, not a necessity. It's working for now but I don't know how long he plans on doing it. We'll see.

He works 62 one week, then 22 the next week. So it comes out to 84 hours every 2 weeks.

Re: How many hours a week does your husband work?

My husband doesn't work crazy hours at all....maybe about 7 hours a day in the office and a few more at home at night. I'm the one who works too much. I'm in at 7 am and leave about 7 pm every day. Then I have an 1.5 hour commute each way and I work at least 4 hours both saturday and sunday mornings before my hubby gets up.
