I don't think our neighboors like us (vent...long...sorry)

we live in a co-op...and the every now and then we see our neighbor's around our building and we always are very nice to them. Well the other day I rode the evelvator with one of them (i was outside w/ a friend who wanted to smoke because I don't like cig smoke in the apt) and she held her nose close during the whole elevator trip. I know cig smoke can be offensive to some people, but I just thought that it was a little rude. And then yesterday I rode the elevator up with another neighbor who I never seen before and didn't know he lived across the hall from us and when I got out of the elevator I didn't hold the door for him (cause I didn't know he was getting out to) and he sarcastically goes "Thank you" Chat Icon Of course I said that I was sorry but he looked so annoyed. I just can't stand people that are rude like that...especially when me and DH are very nice people and very considerate to our neighbor's...sorry just had to vent.

some people are just jerks. Seems to me that this may apply w/ a few of your neighbors. I would not take it personal...just goes to show you how silly people can be. Chat Icon Chat Icon

OK, I live in a co-op as well

1. The cigarette smoke thing is not rude at all. Given the stuff in the news about second-hand smoke and what-not, people have very strong feelings about not wanting to breathe it in.

2. The door holding. Major pet peeve of mine. Not cool to not hold doors for neighbors. In this case though, it's understandable because you didn't know, but his reaction is understandable as well

I assume your friend was not smoking in the elevator- she just smelled like smoke. Any adult who holds their nose is being immature. I have seen kids do it- but adults. Come on. If you are bothered by it, then say something- but don't act like a baby and hold your nose.

I also would say "Thanks" about the door holding thing. BUt if someone apologized and said they didn't know I was getting out, I would smile and say "that's OK". Over.

If you are standing with someone who smokes then you are going to smell like smoke.
Because I quit a year ago I HATE that smell AND since I became pregnant the smell makes me want to vomit...I would have held my nose too.

Re: I don't think our neighboors like us (vent...long...sorry)

Ill add...

3. Some people who smoke just STINK after they had a cig. I am sorry... its nothing personal. Most people who smoke will debate that they don't smell... they are clean... chew gum afterwards. Sorry... but it doesn't help.

A huge pet peeve of mine is getting into an enclosed elevator with someone who just got on after having a cig. Its nasty. I won't go as far as holding my nose... but its gross.

I dread the times where I come into work... i see people outside smoking. I PRAY that I grab the elevator and go up before they come in to the lobby. One time I got stuck with about four of them who just came in from outside. I wanted to puke.

Ok, PG I can see it letting it slide...but holding your nose the entire way. I would have waited for the elevator to come back down.

I agree with your points! But we weren't smoking in front of her...we came in from outside after smoking and anyone who smokes or knows people that do when you come in after smoking, yes you smell bad...i personally thought it was rude for her to do that. - it's a 30 sec elevator ride, and we live right next door to each other. c'mon . I don't complain when she plays her piano at 12 o'clock at night.

And of course it's not cool to hold the doors for people Chat Icon but i didn't know he was getting off...I said I was sorry and he still seemed annoyed.

Just feel they have the wrong impression of us.

I agree- that being in an elevator with someone who smokes can be very nasty. My SIL is a chain smoker or Marlboro Reds Chat Icon And she wanted to watch my baby when she comes out. Hellz No!!

But you can hold your nose without physically "holding your nose". I just start breathing through my mouth.

ETA: How many times have we been stuck with someone who smells bad in a professional or social setting where holding your nose would be inappropriate. What do you do then? YOu can be a grown up and not phsycially "hold your nose"

I agree. That lady was obviously literally stating her point. Very mature lady, different strokes for different folks.

I agree. The smell makes me gag but I wouldn't go so far as to hold my nose.

I agree with everyone that after someone smokes it is nasty...and it can be very offensive to non-smokers. I just thought it was uncalled for her to actually hold her nose shut. She may have found the smell offensive but I found her action to be even more offensive.

I think you are 100% correct on this one. I rode in an elevator yesterday with a woman with the most AWFUL perfume. Maybe its the pregnancy or the fact that she dumped a whole bottle of it on herself. BUt I would never think of holding my nose. It is clear that this woman was making a point- in a rude way.

From a non-smokers point of view...how would you like to be stuck in an elevator with someone who took a dump in their pants or who has a gas problem?

Granted, holding her nose was immature, but the smell can sometimes be overpowering and being in tight quaters, like an elevator, might have made it even worse.

To be honest, she totally did that to be a b!tch. You can easily HOLD your breath without having to actually HOLD YOUR NOSE! lol
