So first controversial topic for LIF

This comes up at my job quite often and nobody ever really has an answer but:

Do you think that the Mentally Retarded should be allowed to have children....?

Meaning should they be put on BC forcefully?

Re: So first controversial topic for LIF

Wow way to start the morning Red! This is a tough situation....should people who can not understand what being a parent is nor take care of their child be able to have children? I know plenty of people who don't know either have children all the time. But does that make it right? I think my issue is with the forceable BC...I don't believe in Forcing anyone to do anything.

Re: So first controversial topic for LIF

I have to say I am completely ignorant on the topic. I actually never was certain that the mentally retarded could carry a baby to term.

However, just off the cuff, I would say that no, no one should be forcefully put on birth control. I know it would present an whole host of issues to society to have to care for these children but we don't impose this sort of 'will' on welfare moms so I can't see imposing it on the mentally retarded.

I would be really interested in hearing what others who have more info than I do (a lot more, probably) have to say.

No, seriously...forcing people to go on BC is on the fine line of infringing on their rights. Thats like saying the Mentally Retarted don't have any rights

they know how to take pills...
plus you can give a shot.

It isn't about teaching them how to take BC really
BUT rather should they be on it.

it is a violation of the client rights!

BUT you are able to force someone
You usually have to go to a clients rights committee and explain the need for it

I think it is something that should be decided on a case by case basis. I would guess that there are mentally retarded people out there who are not so disabled that they could not care for a child. Then again, I don't consider myself qualified to make such a judgement.

Frankly, I think that there are probably "mentally retarded" people who are more equipped to have and raise kids than some of these fourteen year olds I see at my job who squeeze out kids like there's no tomorrow.

Re: So first controversial topic for LIF

tough topic...I think that the decision to have a child is really up to each individual woman. I don't think that the goverment has a right to dictate who can and who can not have a child.

Although there are extreme circumstances....I dont believe that a known child molester should be allowed to care for any child.

So I guess my real answer would have to be...it depends on the individual circumstances...case by case basis.

This is a tough topic.

I think you have to look at what are the chances that 2 mentally challenged people having a mentally challanged child. If the chances are high, then they should not be able to have children.

they do when they are deemed unable to make decisions for themselves...

I guess its the same chances as anyone having a genetic "defect" (and I say that in a very loose term) passing it on to their child

Really? Ok, then I'd have to say I'd go by that. If they're deemed unable to consent to intercourse than they are unable to make decisions about this aspect of life for themselves at all. Thus, they should be put on birth control.

However, if they have the mental capacity to make that decision, I would assume that means they have the capacity to examine the consequences of their actions and decide for themselves.

Isn't this on the fine line of exterminating a race of people?

Re: So first controversial topic for LIF

You are right, but some people are advised not to have children because of some genetic problem that could be passed on to a child.

true but in all honesty a lot of institutions deem people unable because it is easier....NOT necessarily because they can't.

I guess that is why i am curious about the topic...where is that line draw...it is sooo subjective
