How much $$ do you give for a Sweet 16?
It is my DH's nieces Sweet 16 in June. We are definately giving her cash, but not sure how much. Last night DH says he wants to give her $500!!!
I told him he was INSANE!!!! Because then we have to give that to his other niece and nephew when they turn 16. Not to mention there is another baby on the way in that family. In MY family I've got 2 nieces, 2 nephew's and twins on the way!!!!
He told me that I am CHEAP! $500! That's nuts! Plus I am helping them with the centerpieces, and buying/cooking a tray of food for the party that will cost anywhere from $75-$100 depending if I make it myself or not.
What are your thought? How much would you give?
We usually spend $50-$60 on a normal birthday.

We went through this last year-DH wanted to give his niece $500 (we normally give them $50 for birthdays) I thought that was too much!!!!! After MUCH discussion, and asking my SIL's what they were giving....we settled on $300 (which I still think was too much-but he was adamant)

$500 for a sweet sixteen? Most people didn't even give us over $200 for our WEDDING. $500 seems really extreme to me.

I agree. I usually give $100 and buy a gold bracelet, earrings or necklace with it. I like giving a gift so this way I do both.

That sounds reasonable. Anything more than 100 is insane!

Same here. I would not give her more than I would for a HS graduation gift. To me, that would be putting too much importance on something that is not as significant a life event.

I think $500 is insane. I think that $100 and maybe a piece of jewelry along with it is more than generous.

$500 is alot - I don't think that is necessary. I think that 200 is a very generous gift.

My niece and nepew (twins) turned sixteen last year and I gave them each $250. I am extremely close with them and I thought that was generous. 500 sounds a bit extreme to me.
