Re: NYC teachers!!!
If you guys only knew what the stress levels are like all school year long.
If you've never taught you have NO IDEA.
If I didn't have summers off I'd be clinically insane!

Re: NYC teachers!!!
I know how stressful teaching is but I still don't feel bad. If anybody is an English teacher willing to give up their job for a teacher who is literally dying to be going back to the classroom, call me cause having no job to go back to sucks more than having to go back the day after labor day

Re: NYC teachers!!!
my mother is a teacher too, so I know you all work hard. BUt I am a social worker in a psychiatric ER. Let me add that my job is stressful too and I only get 4 weeks off a year. But at least when I become clinically insane they can medicate me immediately

And you probably get compensated monetarily so much more.
I don't mean to sound B!tchy..this is just a pet peave of mine. We teach kids who many people wouldn't want to put up with for 5 minutes for 10 months out of the year -- a whole classful of them....and when people say that we don't deserve our summer break, it just pisses me off....I'll try not to take it personally, but seriously, until you've been there in a classroom with 27 kids, 10 of which are ADHD off the wall, of a class of 12 kids and half of them are Emotionally Disturbed and kick the crap out of you on a daily basis ... yet you LOVE what you do and wouldn't ever want to do something else, because you feel you are making a difference or at least trying damn hard to....then you really have no right saying that we aren't worthy or are "lucky" for getting our summers off.

I never said you didnt deserve your summer break - but you should appreciate it and not complain its almost over.
I work in a highly stressful environment and yes I make more than my FH (but I know plleanty of teachers who make more than me) but I work 50 hour + weeks and get much less vacation time.
I have a lot of friends that are teachers - and I am sick of hearing them complain that their vacation is almost over, yet I havent had FIVE days in a row off this year.
I think teaching is an amazing career and you should be very proud doing something you love - but please dont complain that you have to go back to work -because most people dont get a nice long break!

any normal person will complain when a vaction is ending who really wants to go back? its really not easy. most people who have only 2 weeks off complain that they dont want to go back. Now imagine having 2 months off. there is alot of anxiety in going back to something totally different form what u left. its only normal to Bit ch alittle and once its out of your system u feel better especailly when u have people who can relate and not judge

Re: NYC teachers!!!
Although I do not have a job to go back to, I want to defend my profession
I'm fed up with these teachers and their hefty salary guides. What we need here is a little perspective.
If I had my way, I'd pay these teachers myself - I'd pay them babysitting wages. That's right - instead of paying these outrageous taxes, I'd give them $3 an hour out of my pocket.
And I'm only going to pay them for 5 hours, not coffee breaks or lunch.
That would be $15 a day - each parent should pay $15 a day for these teachers to baby-sit their child. Even if they have more than one child, it is still a lot cheaper than private day care. Now how many children do they have in a class - maybe thirty? That's $15 x 30 = $450 a day.
But remember, they only work 180 days a year! I'm not going to pay them for all those vacations!! $450 x 180 = $81,000. (Just a minute, I think my calculator must need batteries!)
I think this speaks for itself and I do not have to say anything else.

Re: NYC teachers!!!
OMG I am not bashing teachers AT ALL
my FIANCEE is a teacher - I see how hard he works.
I just hate this time of year when my teacher friends, who have the best tans due to their many days of beachcombing, complain that their summer is ending.
im jealous, i'll admit, but please dont say that my job ISNT stressful just because i dont deal with kids, because my job is stressful and I dont get two months off to recharge.
and I agree teachers are underpaid - again FH is a teacher - with $40K in student loans and cant get a LI job because he's not 'connected' enough.
so please, dont turn me into the teacher hater! Im just saying you had two months off!! feel lucky!

Exactly! Imagine the anxiety of going back to work after vacation and not knowing anybody you're 'working' with. No idea how personalities are going to mesh, what happened over the break that may have really altered someones personality/view on things?
And, tell me, what other job probably spends more a good portion of their salary to better the performance of their employees?

Exactly Nancy!!!
I have not been doing this long and I am already tired of defending this profession.
Teachers make all other professions possible, everybody needs to remember that.

We can only go on vacation during peak times!

OH and by the way I just consolidated my students loans. My education cost me $97,000.00 and I am enrolling in more classes in the Spring to better myself for my students.
My salary doesn't even begin to cover that.

Re: NYC teachers!!!
Also -- if you add up all the hours that we actually work -- and not just the hours that we have the kids for ... but the hour and 15 minues that I and many teachers go in early every morning...and the 45 minutes we stay late, working through many lunches, holding meetings with parents, making phone calls, getting last minute paperwork together,
PLUS everything that we take home---neglecting time with our family and kids....
And aside from the physical work -- this isn't something you can leave when you leave the building. When you're worried that a kid is being abused and debating whether to call it into CPS or not, or when you do call it in and you don't know if the kid was removed from the home and put in a safe place or not, or when they come and take your kid out of your class because of abuse...you take it all home. You lose sleep at night because your heart is breaking for that poor child.
When you have a kid who is so strung out because they were born with toxicology reports OFF THE CHARTS and they can't handle being in a class with only 9 other kids, and you have to restrain them every day so that they don't hurt others, but you end up being hurt badly in return ... bites, bruises, things thrown at you...you take that home.
I work WELL over 40, WELL over 50.
I'm not complaining, just trying to prove a point.
Like I said, I LOVE LOVE LOVE my job. Hate having to move my classroom and switch grades every year, but I love my students to death, the most difficult ones the most.
But it doesn't mean I don't wish summer could linger a little longer.
