I guess I am the only one... but I would not want that dog around my baby once I gave birth. Babies and toddlers aren't always "Easy" on dogs and I'm sorry but once it bites a child once there is a good chance it will happen again Chat Icon I hope you at least get some type of training for this dog .

And how can any parent even hesitate about taking your child to the ER when it is clear they need medical attention, for fear they will take the dog is no excuse! Your childs health and safety comes first . I'm sorry but that part made me very upset and sick to my stomach!!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

wow was this really necessary? obvisouly they are scared and upset and did not know what to do. You are entitled to your opinion but that was extremely harsh

Kim-I am glad everything worked, and your daughter is okay.

YES IT WAS NECESSARY!! Many people have fm'd me saying they agree with it but I guess they choose not to post it. Sorry but someone had to say it.

There are lots of times as a parent you are scared/upset/don't know what to do. But you don't just sit around while your daughter has a deep cut in her face deciding on if you should go to the ER or not. You GO and have your daughter taken care of and worry about the dog later.

As a parent I can honestly say worrying if the dog would get reported or taken away would be the LAST THING on my mind.

They were worried, and to post you what you said just wasnt right. Their daughter was taken care of. Are you a dog owner? unless you have been in this situation you cannot pass judgement on someone like this is just mean

Yes I am a dog owner. You are intitled to your opinion of what is and is not right. I think not rushing your daughter to the ER the second it happened was not right and so I responded.

I am not a dog owner, but I am a parent. I agree with MABLE03. My child would be my first priority. If medical attention is needed, everything else is secondary.
I'm glad the child received the medical help she needed. I hope she feels better soon.

I'm a dog owner, but not a parent. A similar topic came up on Pets a few weeks ago.

I would definitely have brought the child to the ER right away. But, I probably would have lied and said it was someone else's dog, just to not have to deal with what would happen to the dog at the same time as worrying about my child. Once my child was taken care of, I'd probably bring the dog to my mom's house to stay.

I have to agree my first reaction when reading this is the same as Mable03's. The fact that she recieved 12 stitches for the cut indicates it was very serious. There should be no delay in rushing your child to the ER for treatment, delaying that to think of the dog is very wrong in my opinion.

I just wanted to add I don't put the blame on LuvSun. There was no way She could see how serious the bite was since she wasn't even in the same state. He should have just taken his daughter to the ER right away and not have called his wife asking what to do... she had no idea how serious of a bite it was without seeing it for herself.

Re: HELP...ASAP...PLEASE...UPDATE 7/18

Whoa....didn't think this thread would take a turn for the worst!

First...DH called and told me what happened, and told me he didn't think it was that bad, and had stopped bleeding after a few minutes. He called me back a few minutes later to tell me that he thinks she needs stitches...so I told him to take her to the ER. For the record....DD has been told numerous times not to sneak around the house (well after bedtime) and not to bother the dog (he was fast asleep), so I think DH was more in shock and pi$$ed at DD and that was his first reaction. Once he realized that the bite was deep, he went to the ER. DH also made the ER send a cosmetic surgeon to do the stitches, since they were on her face to leave a minimal scar...so his daughter's best interest were certainly at hand.

Honestly...I think the comments were uncalled for in regards to our parenting skills...but to each his own for their opionion...and that is what makes the world go round.

For all that sent me hugs and FM's, I appreciate the support, as I feel bad enough being so far away from my family for so much of the time. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: HELP...ASAP...PLEASE...UPDATE 7/18

I aggree for the most part with Mable's post --- and there was more to my post that I made earlier in the thread but I removed it because I didn't want to freak luvsun out...

But I would seriously consider what is going on with the dog. I know that this was a first time and you said that the dog was sleeping and confused, but I have problems with a dog being around children and a new baby coming that would do that.

Yes, I am a dog owner. I've always had dogs my entire life.

Yes, I am a mother as well.

When we were in HS my sister was viciously attacked -- MAULED by her boyfriend's family dog. This was a VERY Friendly dog, they loved this dog so much. The dog would sleep in the bed with my sister and her boyfriend (yes, she slept over, that's another thread completely) and was always gentle towards everyone.

Then one day her BF and brother were fighting and she was yelling at them to stop -- and with the stress of the situation the dog just freaked out and attacked my sister.

Basically her bicep muscle on her arm was completely severed. It took about 6 people to get the dog off of her. She has perminant muscle and nerve damage and can not use the bicep muscle in her arm because it is in two pieces and did not reattach. The other muscles in her arm have made up for it, and even with plastic surgery her arm is mishapen.

They didn't put the dog to sleep, they thought it was a freak accident because of all the yelling. 2 years later the dog attacked her newphew who was 2 or 3 years old at the time. It was a bad attack --- the boy had organs that were punctured and needed surgery.

I'm not saying to put your dog to sleep. I love my dog and know that a pet is part of the family. But I would seriously consider the exposure your dog has to young children and keep a CLOSE close watch on him. You never know what can happen. It is just so scary and you never know when the most beloved, gentle pet can freak out because of being scared/confused/teased -- whatever -- and react in a bad way!

I am sorry if this just freaked you out and I don't want to be a debbie downer but it has actually been on my mind all day.

Wow.... I'm glad your stepdaughter is OK. I'm sure it was a traumatic experience for her and I would look for signs of her maybe becoming afraid of the dog. I would also reassure her that it's not her fault.

I have to say I agree with MABLE03. I hope and pray that this is an isolated incident. This is my biggest fear about having a dog around my son.

Re: HELP...ASAP...PLEASE...UPDATE 7/18

For the record...the dog is not going anywhere....

When I spoke to DH earlier to check on things...my stepdaughter was laying on the couch watching a movie with the dog! Everyone is fine and this definitely was a single incident/accident.

I have absolutely no concerns about the dogs temperament with my step-daughter or the new baby that is due in a few months. Things happen...it was an accident plain and simple.

I would never leave a newborn alone with the dog regardless....but my stepdaughter is 10 years old, and we do not keep an eye on her every single second...besides, she was supposed to be in bed, and got up to wander and DH had fallen asleep. It was an accident, nothing more.

ETA: I am sure your step-daughters Mother would NOT be happy to hear that your husband hesitated getting their daughter medical attention even for a second for fear of having the dog taken away. That is appalling!!!!
If I were the girl's real mother I would have a serious issue with my Ex husband over this situation.

I have to say, I agree 100% with this post. I was appalled that there was even a doubt about taking her to the ER.

Now I agree that they should seek medical attention ... if you notice only 15 minutes laspsed from the first post to when the child was taken) .. it is for no one to judge ... That is what her husband chose to do right or wrong it was his reaction .. and he was scared .. I mean his child is hurt they could possibly euthanize their dog. I mean it was an accident it wasn't a viscious attack ..she got the medical attention .. But for you to be sickened or appalled is your business ... keep it to yourself fm someone, calling someone out on a situation that hasn't happened to you yet is just plain rude and if you notice she asked for help not your Opinion.. mayb next time you would help convince her to go to the ER not right a long winded rude post of your opinion.

Second Who cares if other people FM'd you about it .. do you think that gives you justification for being RUDE ..?

If you read the OP he was afraid to take her to the ER because the dog might be taken away. I think the point of her post was that the dog's well being should not come before the child's.

and the second and third post - they all ended with "we are afraid they will take the dog."

I think that is what people were reacting to.

Again, chalk it up to internet tone - but the wording of the posts puzzled a lot of us.

no one is saying that the child's well being should be put aside because of the dog. It is that people should not be so mean. Everyone is entitled to their opinions. But the comments that were made were mean and rude and not neccessary.
