Re: Curiosity poll: My parents paid for my...

My parents paid for my undergrad degree but I paid for my 2 grad school degrees.

They paid for the wedding reception (the catering hall). I didn't expect them to but because I'm Greek and they wanted a big Greek wedding (poor Irish DH!) so they paid for it.

Re: Curiosity poll: My parents paid for my...

I lived on my own since I was 17 - meaning once I left for college I never went back home.

My parents are divorced so....

as far as my wedding, my mom bought my dress and all that went along with my outfit

as far as college, my mom paid $400/month for my education and I am still drowning in loans 7 years later

as far as cars, my dad gave me his '86 in '95
my mom gave me her '93 in '00 and her '95 in '01

It may sound like a lot but seriously I had a horrible childhood and I think they are trying to make up for it!

College - They gave what they could, but mostly had loans and small scholarships
Wedding - They paid for 1/3 of the entire bill

I've never had my own car.

Re: Curiosity poll: My parents paid for my...

Wow, I don't want to come off as spoiled, but my parents have paid for a whole lot. They paid for college and sent me to Europe for graduation (even gave me spending $$), they gave me my first car (my mom's old car) and when that died they bought me a new car. They paid for my reception, dress and everything that went with it, and invitations.
And here comes the spoiled part. My dad is in real estate, so he has given both me and my sister our houses- we're next door neighbors. It's not like he bought them for us, but he built them back in the 80s and we now reap the benefits.

Re: Curiosity poll: My parents paid for my...

My parents paid for some of my college (what my scholarships and loans didn't cover) and gave us $2000 towards the wedding. They also paid for my wedding dress. And they paid for the 1st 4 years of payments on my car while I was in college and then I paid the last year.

Ditto

I also think it made me more independent a lot sooner in my life and more responsible.

I am like you too. I was not brought up spoiled but my parents felt like they needed to take care of us.
My parents paid for my college (only 2 yrs. though and paid a majority of my sister's)
They paid the entire wedding
We bought their house-no discount but they saved up for years for our downpayment
They have helped fix up the house with money from a deceased family member
I would NEVER EVER ask them (just my mom now) for money for our everyday expenses. They just knew how hard it was to be young and want to help us out.

I am pretty much with you on this one. I have been independent since I was 17 - worked from age 13 in summers and stuff.

FOr my initial upbringing 0-13 - they were more financially responsible for me.
It was a struggle but I appreciate and relate to things in life some can take for granted.

That sounds like me! I was one of 5 kids so once 6th grade was over that was it -- I bought all my clothes with money from babysitting jobs and then other jobs later on. I worked a lot through HS and college but I'm not afraid to work now and I think I work hard.

Re: Curiosity poll: My parents paid for my...

Just raised me!
I paid for college by loans (although my college tuition was VERY inexpensive for my degree! I went 3 years full time to Nassau, so maybe I spent $15,000 with books!). I did have a great uncle leave me a little money that paid off half of my loans though!

DH & paid for our own wedding, though I gladly would have taken $ if they could have afforded to offer it to us!

Barely anything. I voted "Upbringing"
After I turned 16 all I got was dinner and a place to live.
Clothes, car, going out, I paid for all of that myslef since age 16.
But then I went ahead to help my younger siblings out with cars and college.

My mom bought me my wedding dress and paid the officiant.

I paid the rest of the reception and all of college.

I guess it makes me stronger and more independant in the end.

similar situation for me too, my parents paid for the roof over my head and some food on the table.
I have been on my own since I was 16...even paid for my prom dress! LOl
Dh and I paid our way for undergrad, grad school, law school for him, our wedding and condo. I even paid for my wedding dress and engagement party etc,...
Makes us a more independent couple. But keeps us from having money for a house right now. thank god we have a condo!

Re: Curiosity poll: My parents paid for my...

even though my parents divorced when I was three, my parents have really pulled together to help me out. They both split the entire cost of the wedding- the only thing we had to pay for was invitations and tux rentals. My parents also paid for my college education (suny though- that was the stipulation). When it comes time DH and I are ready to purchase a house, they will give us $ towards a down payment.

I did, however, pay - well take out loans for- my graduate schooling.

ditto. except that i started working at 14.

i know they would've loved to be able to pay for those things, but they couldn't, and that's fine. It makes me proud that everything i have, is because i worked for it. Chat Icon

Re: Curiosity poll: My parents paid for my...

Mom gave me 10K for my first wedding - which was plenty in 1994.

Second time around DH and I paid for it ourselves.

Mom & Dad helped for undergrad - what I couldn't cover through scholarships, student loans and my p/t jobs.

NOTHING

No first car, wedding, college, ANYTHING. I am fine with that I did everything myself or my husband and I did it together. I am very proud of us. Chat Icon

eta. I just saw the upbringing post so I voted for that... But I worked since age 14 and paid for everything myself. The provided me with a roof over my head and food on my plate. thats it.

Re: Curiosity poll: My parents paid for my...

They paid for college...bachelors & masters degree. They also paid for my wedding. We paid for the honeymoon and the photographer/videographer.

I'm an only child, but I wasn't spoiled. My first car was split...I paid for half.

Re: Curiosity poll: My parents paid for my...

my father died when i was 17, or my parents would have helped pay for school.

My grandmother is helping with the wedding (my father was an only child, so my sister and I are her only grandchildren)

other than that I paid for college, car, etc myself.
