Do your DH's share the task of getting up in the middle of the night?

I'm really just being nosey. Sorry, I can't help itChat Icon

JT has a great work schedule where he works only 7 out of every 14 days (he works long hours, though), so all the nights that he has work the next morning, I get up with Ava and all the nights where he's off the next day, he gets up with Ava. It works out well right now becuase he never works more than three days in a row, so I never have to go more than three nights in a row without any sleep or disrupted sleep. However, I'm nervous about how it's going to work when I go back to work in the fall! Hopefully she won't be getting up as muchChat Icon

Weekends we both woke up, since when they were waking it was two. During the week I would since DH works at 3 am. I was also pumping at that time so I would have to wake up anyway.

Re: Do your DH's share the task of getting up in the middle of the night?

Ummmm...nope. Dh does help on Friday and Saturday night by staying up with her or waking up around 6, but the 3, 4 or 5AM feedings, diaper changes, burp sessions, etc...ALL ME Chat Icon

DH has a "challenge" waking up for work let alone his DD. It used to pi$$ me off, but I realized that my job is more flexible than his and I can take cat naps. Plus, he does let me sleep in on Saturday and Sunday. He also watches her every Saturday morning while I go to WW and he gives me at least a hour break (sometimes more) as soon as he comes home from work so I can do what ever I want for myself without interruptions. After 2 1/2 months, we are getting into a groove. I really can't complain, I knew he was a heavy sleeper when I married him and I expected this. I have a wonderful DH, he can't help it if he would sleep through world war 3. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Do your DH's share the task of getting up in the middle of the night?

Yes, he does. He'll feed Jackson his last bottle at around 9pm, then put him down. He'll sleep until usually around 4am which is when I'll get up with him and give him a bottle.
At first he would only sleep until midnight, then he stretched it to 2am, then 3 am, and now 4am.
Ava will naturally start sleeping longer soon on her own, so don't worry - you'll be fine!

Re: Do your DH's share the task of getting up in the middle of the night?

Yes he does.
We kind of worked out a schedule.
Ali usually takes a bottle anywhere from 10:30-11:30 - DH does this one (sometimes if I am up - I will, but for the most part he feeds her).
Then she gets up 3:30-4:30 - I will do this one - cause I can go right back to sleep once we are done.
Then DH gets up with her in the morning so I can sleep late. My deep sleep is usually from 5:30-7:30 so he lets me sleep.

Except last night we switched. Chat Icon

Re: Do your DH's share the task of getting up in the middle of the night?

Since I'm BFing, there's not much point in Al getting up also. Instead, I hand her over in the morning (6-7am) and go back to sleep Chat Icon

He works from home most days, so he's around to help out all day which is awesome.

My SIL used to have her DH wake up just to change the kids at night, but she'd have to get up anyway to BF them. Didn't make sense to me that they should both be exhausted.

Bottle feeding is a different situation, though I think I'd still be the one getting up more often Chat Icon

hopefully the middle of the night feedings wont last much longer...

He would get up on weekends or if I was having a compelte breakdown and just couldn't handle it anymore.
Now that she sleeps through night we each sleep in one day of the weekend.

DH helps with as much as can Chat Icon Being I nurse and DD sleeps with us, nights are simple... She wakes, she eats and goes straight back to sleep Chat Icon

Re: Do your DH's share the task of getting up in the middle of the night?

No, not really. I BF and am a SAHM. My husband gets up at 5am to go to work, so it really wouldn't be fair (DS sleeps later than that -- usually).

If its a particularly bad night he will help. And on the weekends a lot he will rock him back to sleep after I feed him. Or sometimes, he will give him a pumped bottle.

My DH helps a LOT! I would say tht it is about equal. ANd on Saturdays it's my day to sleep in, on sundays his day to sleep in.

I don't know what I would do without him!

Until he went back to work (he stayed home with me for 3 weeks) yes, we took turns. While I was home on maternity leave though and he was working, I did all the getting up at night. He would take care of it on the weekends so I could rest.

Nope. I think maybe he got up 5x in the middle of the nightChat Icon . I always felt bad that he was working and waking up at 5:30am so I did all the middle of the night wakeups (AND I was bfing).

Re: Do your DH's share the task of getting up in the middle of the night?

Dh helps as much as he can, but it's pointless for him to get up at night when I am Bf'ing though.

She wakes up around 6:30am now and since he's on his way out the door he changes her and brings her to me to eat.

Since I am bf, i get up. I figure that it's a waste to wake him up too. I usually go right back to sleep after.

Re: Do your DH's share the task of getting up in the middle of the night?

This is so bad but.. I REALLY need my sleep and I am a big sleeper. So even though I was a SAHM and DH would wake up early and go to work he would get up with DS a large portion of the time. He said he loved having that quiet alone one on one time and in the middle of the night was his only chance for that.

eta. DS wouldn't really stay up though.. he woke up had a bottle and was back asleep.

DH helps out on weekends. That's when I get all of my sleep. Also on the weekends I get a chance to go shopping and sometimes go to lunch with friends.

We share, but I am not working, so I did most of it. I say 'did' b/c its gotten so much better. I actually get stretches of sleep now. He's off on Mondays, so he will get up with her Monday am so I can sleep in .
What we did in the very beginning was I would go to sleep at like 8pm- so from 8-2amish( he is a night person) he would feed her./change her/whatever... and then I would take the late into ealry morning shift. It worked out great for us b/c we both got uninterupted sleep.

When I wasn't working- no.

Now that I am working- he will get up to put her pacifier in her mouth, but he has yet to get up to feed her. Since I BF its not a big deal. I would rather not use my refridgerated milk anyway.

That's no bad! That's so sweet of your DH, and if you are home all day with the baby, there's no reason in the world DH shouldn't get up in the middle of the night!

same here, except this time around, with the toddlers who will also be waking up, im sure we will both be up at least until we settle into a routine Chat Icon

Luca (my 2yr old) gets up at nite and DH brings him into our bed (yep, me, body pillow, hubby and 2yr old Chat Icon ) I cant wait to see how the bassinet's going to fit into this equation Chat Icon

i have never asked DH to get up with DS, but only because I am a SAHM and he needs to get up at like 5-5:30am. if i was working it would be another story.

eta: i'm also EBF so unless i want to be bothered pumping milk for bottles, i still have to get up anyway. in the beginning when DS was up all night long, dh would let me go back to sleep a little bit on the weekends while he would stay up with him. not too long ago i pointed out to dh that i never once asked him to get up with the baby and he said yeah and i never once asked you to go back to work! I'm a SAHM and DH gets up @ 5:00, so I mostly handle any overnight stuff (thankfully, it's pretty non-existent at this point Chat Icon), but, DH is wonderful when I need him, and even surprises me sometimes by not pretending to sleep through it. Chat Icon
